The report that the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has paid all outstanding salaries of coaches at all levels of the national team is music to the ears of the Nigerian fan, It is a remarkable step in the right direction for the game in Nigeria, and the coaches themselves of course.

Before now, one thing the NFF was infamous for, was defaulting on payments of salaries and allowances leading to several protests by coaches and players also. No doubt, the issue is a horrible stain on Nigerian football and the on the continent with Ghana and others battling the same issue too.

This has in many ways affected the performance of the Nigerian teams on various occasions in different tournaments.

The latest episode of such a mess was at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where the Super Eagles boycotted training in protest of nonpayment of bonuses.

Before this welcomed development is the Golden Eaglets handler, Emmanuel Amuneke claimed he had not been paid for several months after hearing Sunday Oliseh was given a contract by the NFF.

“But one thing they have to know is that there are other national team coaches working also that have not been paid,” he said.
However, the NFF seems to have had a change of heart having announced at Oliseh’s unveiling as the National Team Head Coach in Abuja that a three-month advance salary had been paid to the new handler.

The NFF President, Amaju Pinnick who disclosed this said the federation paid the three months advanced salary in order to enable the coach do his work and to prove the seriousness of the federation.

The latest from the seemingly repentant NFF as disclosed by a reliable source in the federation reveals that an order been made for all outstanding debts to be paid to eliminate any distractions ahead of crucial forthcoming Olympic and FIFA qualification matches.

The source stated that the development was a direct fallout of the recent crisis meeting held between the coaches and members of NFF Technical Committee in Abuja.

“The executive committee has given the nod for some of these coaches whose salaries and allowances are pending to be paid immediately.
“I believe this is a fallout of recent meeting held by the technical committee and coaches. And some of these coaches have been speaking about their plight. So we don’t want anything to distract the coaches and players from the task at hand,” the source stated.
