Specialist in the house I need or help. I purchased a 2006 Toyota 4rynner last October and didn't have any issues until recently.
I woke up one day and tried starting d car and it refused to start. I tried till d battery went dead.
Since then my mechanic (who specializes in Japanese cars) has tried all he could.
We have even checked the timing, scanned with several OBD and lastly we are replacing the ECM.
I want to know if replacecin the ECM will need reprogramming. Since we are getting the exact one.

when you scanned it, was ur scanner able to communicate with the ecm?...if yes........its most likely the ecm i s still ok.

so you are saying it does fine the previous day...u parked it....n next day it refused to start?........doesnt sound very plausible

Its shocking as well. Really don't understand it. I have used a 2003 Toyota Camry for 8 years n never experienced dis.

When d ECM unit was open. It was found to have lots of condensation. The mats n lagging around the area was wet. Could did b d cause?. Earth plus thanks so much.

Yes sir, that could be the cause.

And yes you would have to program your car key to work in sync with the new ECM you got. that's if you didn't buy it along with its corresponding key and ignition.

Throwing parts at a problem works somtimes, but that's the expensive route, there are easy ways to know if the engine Ecu is faulty, or crank/cam sensor or just the Ecu fuse. Most people scan, others scan and diagnose. What you really need now is the diagnosis part.

Engine ecus are very rugged, and do not die off without a cause, what's the reapir history of your vehicle? Do. You live in flooded areas?

You got into a flood? That's serious. Has your mecho checked the presence of spark and fuel. If missing can cause start up problem, thats an appropriate area to start off from

You don't have to reprog key, just sync engine Ecu. But how do you know urs is bad?

We got the ECM, installed it but it didn't crank the engine, we installed the old one and it cranked the engine but still didn't start,
we can deduce from this that we need to reprogram the new ECU.
Going forward, I need someone to come do a proper diagnostic, reprogramming and fix this issue.
So my Friends pls recommend someone.

If really feel for u bros. I jst came out ofsimilar condition. In my own case it is a 2000 Honda CRV that my wife drives to her fish farm. While moving it will suddenly off engine. All d lights on d dash board will b on. I will try to restart then after 2-3mins it pick up again.This was happening once in 3days.
My mechanic changed fuel pump, fuel filter and plugs. Infact d occurrence became more frequent. Some time u park at night and in d morning d car wont start until after like 5mins.To cut d long story short. The vehicle spent abt 3wks at mechanic.During dis period he Scanned d vehicle and said it was an electrical problem. He took it to an electrician and that one said i should buy a sensor. D part was nt available in Benin where i live so it was bought and sent from Lagos.
Well sha d part was fixed and d car did nt switch off engine again.

Kai bt during dat period i now knew dat having two cars is nt a luxury bt a neccessity. My wife was taking my new 4runner to d farm, carrying fish and fish feed, while i was hustling public transport. Benin rain beat me shege.

3wks now d vehicle no off once.
Btw i use an 08 4runner(since January this yr). Never experienced any think like u are experiencing or any fault at all.

With new engine ECU (if problem is ecu) car should start and switch off after 2secs.

You are going about fixing your vehicle the wrong way.

Change the smaller parts first. Crank and camshaft sensors (if any part change is required).


Check for back up positive line on engine Ecu, check for ignition power (+), on ecu, check for sensor ground on all sensors, check for 12v(+) on coils, MAF and throttle body and injectors, check for 5v on sensors. If you have run all these tests then remove crank and cam sensors, and test usin a meter.

Bros, this is wonderful, but really am not a specialist on this, kindly recommend someone. am tired of these guys poking around with no good idea of wat the issues are
