NINE-YEAR old Pram Kafle, along with parents
Tej and Tika Kafle have been named by media
as the victims of a fire at Waimate on
Wednesday morning. Firefighters managed to rescue the three sisters from the burning two-storey building.
Two supermarket workers who had jumped in to help also had to be rescued. The two workers were trying to help the girls who had escaped through a window and on to the back verandah above the Everest Indian Restaurant. At the same time, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the first floor unit and removed the bodies of Pram and his parents. The sisters were taken to Timaru Hospital suffering smoke inhalation. One had minor cuts to a hand from escaping through the window. The oldest of the sisters is 23 while the youngest is 12, media have reported.
The Nepalese family are believed to have lived above the restaurant they ran. Investigators, who believe the fire began in the kitchen of the five-bedroom unit, are trying to determine if the building's smoke alarms were working.
