Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen’s Invasion 1897 is a movie portraying emotion, tragedy and war. It’s a film that tells the true story of the British Expedition of 1897, a savage expedition led by Admiral Sir Harry Rawson to react to the murder of eight British people who visited Benin Kingdom(which was then ruled by Oba Ovoranmwen) to overtake its trade.

In order to get rid of the Benin people’s culture and history, Rawson’s troops illegally removed the precious Benin Bronzes and metal plaques that once decorated the Benin royal palace, and the famous 16th century commemorative head and pendent of ivory mask representing Queen Idia (which the FESTAC Mask is replication of).

The memorial head currently resides in the British Museum and the pendant in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. This crucial moment in Nigeria history mask the beginning of the exploitation of Africans by the West.
