The Red Devils released their squad numbers earlier today and it has been revealed that Depay will wear the iconic number seven shirt for next season. Angel di Maria took over the number last season when he arrived at Old Trafford amidst much fanfare, but his move to PSG opened up the slot again and the Dutchman has taken over the mantel from the Argentine. Depay was the highest scorer in the Eredivisie last season and helped PSV Eindhoven to break Ajax’s recent stranglehold on the Dutch league title. He was Van Gaal’s first signing of the summer and wore the number nine shirt during the club’s pre-season tour of the US. Manchester United fans will be hoping that Depay fares better than their last number seven and helps the club to challenge for top honours next season. Players such as George Best, Bryan Robson, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo have worn the number seven shirt in the past at Old Trafford. The club’s other new signings, namely Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Sergio Romero will wear the numbers 36, 31, 28 and 20 on the back of their shirts respectively. Victor Valdes, who is expected to be on his way out of the club, has not been assigned a squad number.
