Having known that the works of Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering slightly overlap to some extent, argument often ensue concerning which is actually better than which. Well, the use of the term ‘VS’ in the title of the post is somewhat misleading as there is no form of competition between the two courses.

They simply represent different emphases in engineering course of study. The purpose of this post is to just run some comparisons of the two courses, no string attached.

DEFINITION : Electrical engineers are meant to design, repair or develop electrical equipment or devices while Computer engineers develop, design, test and repair various types of computer hardware.

ORIGIN : Computer Engineering actually originates from Electrical Engineering in the late 70’s and still somehow considered as a sub-discipline in Electrical Engineering.

SOFTWARE/HARDWARE : Electrical Engineering is majorly hardware with little or no software involvement. Computer Engineering can either be software or hardware, depending on area of interest of the student.

CURRICULA : Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering have separate curricula. In Computer Engineering, you are dealing more with coding principles and computer-specific architecture, while in Electrical, you are learning circuit level design.

DISTINCTION : A key distinction is that computer engineers work mostly indoors, while electrical engineers sometimes work out of doors in the field.

DURATION: They are both of same length when studying in most Nigerian schools.

JOB PROSPECT : Computer is your way if you want to earn quite much money and retire early. Electrical Engineering, if you want a smooth job, long career. The caveat is you’d earn a lot less than a Computer Engineer when you start.

FUTURE CONSIDERATION : Electrical engineering, I would say, would give you a bit of a balance between the two since electrical engineering covers a wide range of subfields, including computer engineering itself. Thereby more relevant in future.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEER PROS AND DRAWBACKS
Electrical engineers help design and develop new technologies and equipment used in both residential and business settings, such as electric power generators. If you enjoy creating useful and innovative products, this field makes a lot of sense.

The breadth of industries using electrical engineers contributes to job variance and career stability. The potential for long hours, dangers of electrical systems electricity, and lower pay than other engineering jobs are among the drawbacks.

COMPUTER ENGINEERING PROS AND DRAWBACKS
This is a high-demand career field. Advancement of mobile technology contributes to steady career options. A computer engineer needs to stay abreast of emerging computer languages constantly advance and change.

Computer professionals increasingly need to work in organizational or departmental teams, which makes interpersonal and social skills necessary. This requirement may challenge those that prefer a lab-based jobs.

DISCLAIMER :This post is not in any way meant to bad-mouth or praise any course, just some observations made by a human being which are meant to be probably wrong according to your own perspectives.
