Job Duties and Tasks for: Land Surveyor
Company: O’Spaces Nigeria Limited

Preferred degrees include: Civil/structural engineering; land/estate surveying or any other related discipline.
No of Position: 1

Year of Experience: 5 years post NYSC especially in a construction company.

Location: Lagos, Nigeria

Salary: 150K - 250K


As the company’s Land Surveyor, you will be expected to work with engineers, architects and builders to produce precise descriptions (surveys and maps) of surface features of buildings and the earth.

The candidate is expected to:

1) Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of
surveys in order to describe certify work performed.

2) Verify the accuracy of survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.

3) Direct or conduct surveys in order to establish legal boundaries for properties, based on legal deeds and titles.

4) Record the results of surveys, including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of the land or land features.

5) Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines and other characteristics of terrain.

6) Preparation of all data, charts, plots, records, and documents related to surveys.

7) Plan and conduct ground surveys designed to establish baselines, elevations, and other geodetic measurements.


cool Coordinate findings with the work of engineering and architectural personnel, clients, and others concerned with projects.

9) Adjust surveying instruments in order to maintain their accuracy.

10) Establish fixed points for use in site setting out, using geodetic and engineering instruments.

11) Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas, using theodolites, total station, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS).

12) Analyze survey objectives and specifications in order to prepare survey proposals or to direct others in survey proposal preparation.

13) Compute geodetic measurements and interpret survey data in order to determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.

14) Measure building surveys: Floor plans and elevations are produced for structural, architectural and engineering building. They are used for building redevelopment and structural analysis.

15) Setting-out Work: Transfer of map information to ground. Examples columns, alignment marking, etc.

As a land surveyor you would collect and analyse data to map the shape of land for civil engineering and construction projects.
Your duties could include:
• carrying out initial surveys and environmental impact assessments on potential sites to assess whether construction plans are workable
• using surveying instruments and GPS to chart exact coordinates of site features (geospatial measurement)
• producing digital images of sites (photogrammetry) and mapping land use with satellite photography (remote sensing)
• gathering data and using geographic information systems (GIS) to analyse and interpret site features (geomatics)
• monitoring land movement and subsidence caused during the construction project or by natural processes (geomechanics)
• Draughting 2D and 3D charts and maps using computer aided design software and other cartographic techniques.

Skills, interests and qualities
As a land surveyor, you will need:
• an understanding of surveying technology and CAD programs
• excellent structural and civil engineering skills
• a creative approach to problem solving
• the ability to work to a high degree of accuracy
• the ability to analyse and interpret graphical data
• knowledge of health and safety
• strong communication, and presentation skills
• the ability to prioritize and plan work effectively
• Multi-tasking and ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Good team working skills.
