Pooping the wrong way? Yes! I mean exactly that! Pooping the wrong way. You might have been pooping the wrong way all along. Now let’s learn how to do it right!

In his 1966 book The Bathroom, Alexander Kira termed the sit-down toilet “the most ill-suited fixture ever designed”. According to Kira, as well as subsequent studies on the same, toilets conflict with our bodies by forcing us into unnatural positions.

Kira states that squatting is a natural position that opens the anal sphincter and moves the body’s plumbing into fitting position subsequently permitting you to poop more freely and comfortably.

Several studies have been done to ascertain Kira’s claims; one of the studies being done in 2003 and the findings published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences Journal. The study found that those who squat took approximately 51 seconds to move their bowels while the ones who used sitting toilet spent an average of 130 seconds.

Sitting on our toilets turns our bodies into anorectal angle, which kinks our rectum making it difficult for us to poop. On the contrary, squatting relaxes the puborectalis muscle taking out the kink in the process. This permits us to dispose our waste without unnecessary straining. This system additionally helps us to prevent hemorrhoids and urinary tract diseases from developing.

According to different researches that have been done, sitting toilet does not only cause hemorrhoids, but also diverticular disease. According to Bockus’s Gastroenterology, “the ideal posture for defecation is the squatting position, with the thighs fixed upon the abdomen”

However, several findings have indicated that squatting toilet helps to prevent hemorrhoids, painful swellings that occur in the anal canal due to forceful defecation. Advocates of squatting argue that by squatting we can accomplish “complete evacuation” of the colon, freeing our bowels of any disease causing toxins.

In hemorrhoid patients, the veins remain swollen for a longer period and may even bleed. In principle, squatting may fight off hemorrhoids by making pooping simpler, lessening the need to strain and decreasing abdominal pressure.

An Israeli researcher named Dov Sikirov did a study in 2003 that was published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences. He had a few dozen patients poop in each of 3 positions: sitting on a 16-inch-high toilet, a 12-inch-high toilet, and squatting over a plastic container.

He asked his subjects to record the duration every solid discharge took and rate the effort needed on a four-point scale running from smooth (effortless) to troublesome (difficult).

Sikirov found that, when squatting, subjects took only 51 seconds to move their bowels, versus 130 seconds when sitting on a high toilet. Furthermore, as they moved from a sit to a squat position, subjects were more likely to rate the experience as less demanding.

In 2009, a group of Japanese researchers expanded Sikirov’s findings by taking a closer look at what happens inside the body while individuals squat and sit. In this study, published in the Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms medical journal, six subjects had their rectums filled with a contrast solution and after that discharged the liquid from a squatting or a sitting position while being taped with X-beam device.

Image examination demonstrated that the anorectal angle increased from 100 degrees to 126 degrees as the subjects moved from a sit to a squat. The scientists additionally recorded abdominal pressure, and found that the subjects were straining less when they squatted.

The study noted,

“The greater the hip flexion accomplished by squatting, the straighter the rectoanal channel will be, and in like manner, less strain will be needed for defecation“

These findings demonstrate that squatting streamlines defecation and lessen the risks of suffering from hemorrhoids. With a squat position, bowel movements seem to happen naturally without you having to push or strain.

According to Anish Sheth, MD, co-author of the books “What’s Your Poo Telling You and What’s My Pee Telling Me,” there are some underlying physiologic sense to squatting. Anish states “Simply put, it straightens out the colon.”

You might already be contemplating building a “drop toilet” outside your apartment? No need for that, at least you have squatty potty at your service.

Health Problems Associated With Sitting Toilet

Constipation: Sitting does not permit the rectum to relax completely when it is the right time to go which eventually create hard dry stool which are difficult to eliminate.
Hemorhoids: When using a sitting toilet, you will have to apply too much pressure and pushing which subsequently causes hemorrhoids.
Colon infection: improper toilet posture can prompt a buildup of fecal matter in the colon and our bodies can’t assimilate all the supplements from the food we eat, which abandons us without vitality and could prompt colon disease.
Urinary infections/difficulties: Sitting makes it more difficult for women to urinate in light of the fact that the muscles are not totally loose.
Pelvic floor issues: The sitting position causes pressure to build up on the anorectal angle of the colon, which causes the lower section of the colon to drop and jut into the wall of the vagina.
Health Benefits of Squatting

Promotes faster and simpler disposal/pooping
Prevents waste stagnation (being left behind) that would otherwise increases the risk of colon cancer
Keeps the fecal from entering and contaminating the small intestine
Protects the pelvic floor and the nerves responsible for prostate health, bladder control and sexuality
Protects the nerves in charge of the control of prostate, bladder and uterus, preventing any stretching which can lead to damages
Assists pregnant women with a natural delivery by avoiding the pressure or weight on the uterus which occurs when they use the toilet
