Most free satellite images are offered by LandSat which is hosted by the United State Geological Survey (USGS). By definition, satellite images are images of the whole or part of the earth taken using artificial satellites. Its usage include; Indigenous Communities/Land Delimitation Land Use and Land cover detection Shoreline change detection Vegetation studies Suitability Analysis Policy Analysis and Design Tool Toxic Waste identification/documentation Monitoring Urban Sprawl Crime amongst many others Images can be downloaded by following the steps below: 1.The image was downloaded from www.landsatlook.usgs.gov 2.Register your details on the site 3.Start LandSat look viewer (see figure 1) 4.The download year can be slid to the year of choice (i.e. 1984 or 2015) 5.cloud cover set at “20%” 6.Drag map to area of choice i.e. Lagos (path:191, row:056 & 055) see figure 1 7.Click “zoom in to 1:1M to show image” and drag the screen to position the area of choice to the centre of the computer screen 8.The zoom in to 1:1M to show image button will be replaced by show image which will be clicked on 9.Click image display and then export display (see figure 3) 10.Click metadata and data access (see figure 3) 11.Click all query result (see figure 3) to display all images captured around the zoom area 12.Scroll right till you get to the path and row of choice 13.Click add to cart 14.The image can now be downloaded after clicking on go to cart The downloaded, zipped image will be unzipped via WinRAR zip archive software and then saved into a specified folder in the C-drive of the computer After the download, pre-processing, enhancements and interpretation can now be carried out using any remote sensing softwares such as ArcGIS, Ilwis, Erdas, Map info, Idrissi or Envi 2 Shares
