Travelling abroad to study is a global practice that dates back to several centuries till this day and happens in nearly every parts of the world, including in developed and developing countries. Knowledge is universal hence the pursuit of it is also universal. Those who go abroad in pursuit of knowledge or are studying outside their country of origin or nationality are usually considered as international students.

As expected, Africans and indeed Nigerians are not left out of this pursuit of universal knowledge. With a population over 160 million and the largest economy in Africa, Nigeria accounts for the highest number of international students from Africa travelling abroad for studies and ranks in the top five countries in the world alongside countries like China, India, Taiwan and Singapore.

In spite of recent efforts to revamp the education sector in Nigeria, access to quality education remains a challenge. For example, there are nearly 1.7 million secondary school students seeking a place at university each year via JAMB/UTME, but the country’s education system can accommodate only about half a million students. These factors have contributed to a rapid increase in the number of students and families seeking study options abroad resulting in 71% increase in the number of international students from Nigerian in overseas institutions between 2007 and 2014.

This growth is expected to continue and Nigeria is poised to be one of the most significant growth markets in international education in the decade ahead. Nigeria is projected to lead the world in tertiary-age population growth through 2024. The country’s population of 18-to-22 year-olds is forecast to grow from 16.1 million in 2013 to 22.5 million by 2024. In other words, there will even be more Nigerians travelling abroad for studies in the years to come.
