Being a wrestling fan takes more than just feeling the entertaining impact of the actions, drama, suspense and intrigues that comes with every wrestling storyline. Well, for many decades professional wrestlers all over the world have actually lived two lives. On one part they are the super stars we see in the ring, with their unique personae and attitudes, going by a different Monika or stage names.

These professional athletes also have their own personal lives with an original name given by their parents. One interesting thing about this career part is that you are expected to behave and live in the same manner even outside the ring. Wrestlers are not expected to socialize with opponents in public places. A wrestler maintains the same storyline with opponents in public places.

This aspect of pro-wrestling is referred to simply as “KAYFABE”. A word used to describe a wrestler’s in-ring role as it is portrayed outside the ring. Or it could be understood as “be fake”, meaning wrestlers are supposed to fake their storyline in real life scenarios especially when dealing with fans and other wrestlers in public places.

Well since this word (kayfabe) have been around for as long as the wrestling business, Oxford dictionary have added it officially as an English word. Check out how it is translated:

kayfabe

Syllabification: kay·fabe

Pronunciation: /’ka?fab/

noun

(In professional wrestling) the fact or convention of presenting staged performances as genuine or authentic:
“a masterful job of blending kayfabe and reality”

“he’s not someone who can break kayfabe and talk about the business”

[as modifier]: “I heard that AJ approached him to rehearse a kayfabe segment”

Origin

1980s: origin uncertain; often said to have arisen in American traveling carnivals. One explanation interprets the word as an alteration of ‘be fake’ written backwards, while the -ay- element is typical of the way in which words are formed in pig Latin.

(Via Oxford Dictionary)

The best part is the dictionary naming “AJ” in the definition. You think that’s Lee, or Styles? They don’t name the identity of “him,” so let’s hope “him” is Christopher Daniels, and the “kayfabe segment” AJ’s approaching him about is the Claire Lynch baby shower. That’s the kind of segment that needs dictionary immortalization.

Now Oxford needs to add “Jabroni” so we can accurately describe whoever okayed adding “kayfabe” to the dictionary.

I like the way these people keep updating their language. At the moment there is an english word for almost everything under the sun meanwhile most of our indigenous vocabularies stop after colonialism.

Who here knows the native words for 'blender', 'diesel generator' and 'television' in their language?
