Down by the culvert beyond our crescent A man beggar sits with his legs crossed His arms open wide beneath his chest His hair like strings of mops linked apart. I meet his gaze upon my faux organza clutch And tossed a pound to the salver by his side He smiled at me to mask a loss A loss from the grip of his dignity.
