Although there has been considerable improvement in the supply of electricity throughout the country, the President Buhari-led government seeks to further consolidate on this using clean and renewable energy.
This much was expressed by the Permanent Secretary, Power, Dr. Godknows Igali while signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two indigenous investors, Messrs. Quaint Global Energy Solutions and Messrs. New Horizons Energy Resources, interested in renewable projects, especially solar, biomass and thermal plant.
At the signing ceremony, Quaint Global Energy Solutions, represented by Seun Solesi, announced that his company was to enjoy a US$13million grant from the United States Trade Development Agency’s Power Africa Initiative to carry out feasibility studies for its proposed 50MW solar-powered plant in Machiok, Kaduna State, with a 50-hectare land already approved by the Kaduna government.
New Horizons Energy Resources intends to use locally sourced materials and recruit & train Nigerians in the US in preparation for its project, which entails building a 100MW solar power plant in Nasarawa State, 300 – 400MW of biomass in Cross River State and 300MW of thermal in Rivers States.
Once these projects are completed and added to the National Grid, the total installed capacity of power plants across the country would greatly increase, thereby improving electricity supply in the country.
The recent improvement in power supply across the country is attributed to the increase in gas supply to thermal plants and the successful anti-vandalism campaign of the current administration.
If the promises of the present administration are kept and power is available to both big, small and medium businesses across the country, then Nigeria may well be on its way to becoming the “Giant of Africa”, both in words and in deeds.
