how do u differentiate tenses in igbo: past, present, future tense? i ate. i am eating. i will eat. |
Re: Learning Igbo Language by ChinenyeN(m): 1:34pm On Jan 19, 2010 |
Past - A consonant-vowel (cV) sound is added after the verb root (vr). To get the past tense, you'd just have to say the vr+cV. General Igbo uses "r" for the consonant sound, and the vowel would be the same vowel of the verb root. So a typical past tense word would look like vr+rV Examples: (vr) ga -- past tense "ga+ra (rV)"; (vr) me -- past tense "me+re (rV)"; (vr) gbu -- past tense "gbu+ru (rV)". Present - There is something called an auxiliary verb for this. For general Igbo it is "na" (ex. O na-abia - [s]he is coming) Future - There is also an auxiliary verb for this one. For most Igbo groups that verb is "ga" (ex. O ga-abia - [s]he will come). So, in conjugating those three sentences you have up there: I ate - m riri nri I am eating - m na-eri nri I will eat - m ga-eri nri This is general Igbo. I don't know how people from your father/mother's place would say it. |

ChinenyeN on: Today at 06:34:02 AM: wow. i'm still scratching my head. but i will figure it out. ChinenyeN on: Today at 06:34:02 AM: thanks prof! is there an auxiliary verb for past tense? |

africhika:Hehh. . . No problem, I guess. And no, there isn't an auxiliary verb for past tense (at least, none that I know of). Maybe this explanation of past tense might help. . . getting past tense in Igbo is like repeating the vowel of the verb root, except with a consonant r, instead of the original verb root consonant. So take "ga" (go) would be "gara" (went), "me" (do) would be "mere" (did), "ji" (hold) would be "jiri" (held), "gozi" (bless) would be "goziri" (blessed), etc. etc. I hope that made sense. . . |

Hi, I'm new to this forum but I'm really interested in Igbo so I decided to write a paper on it for my linguistics class. I was wondering if noun possession could be explained to me? Like how would you say your toy, his toy, the king's toy, etc? |

Hi guys, I'm a non-Nigerian chick with an Igbo boyfriend , and I made the mistake of sending him a love text message in Igbo, which somebody wrote for me! Now he is superexcited that I am learning his language and always trying to speak it to me, so I guess I'd better learn, and fast! Please bear in mind that before we got together about 4 months ago I had never even heard Igbo, so I'm totally new ! that said, I wanna learn, if only how to say good morning and stuff. How do I go about it? I already picked up numbers and other basics from previous post, what I would like to have is verbs please, and maybe how to construct a sentence eg conjunctions and stuff. Thanx in advance. |

CKeeD, possession structure in Igbo is noun-pronoun [i.e. your name - aha gi; his name - aha ya; etc.] Tiki, this site should help you out a bit - http://ilc.igbonet.com/ |
