Let’s face it, iOS 8 was a disaster. It launched full of bugs, it had 10 further updates in 11 months – most of which were bug fixes and even then many of the biggest problems were never fixed. But iOS 9 sees Apple change the game.

Where iOS 8 overreached unleashing a torrent of new features as the expense of stability and performance and general due diligence, iOS 9 is the opposite. Its focus is about refinement, speed and battery efficiency.

Today Apple has officially released iOS 9 after nearly 100 days in beta testing and this is what makes it so interesting:

iOS 9 Highlights
•Improved battery life – up to one additional hour of usage from a full charge (note: Apple only uses the iPhone 6 as an example here)
•A (long awaited) low power mode – adds up to three additional hours of usage
•Reduced installation size – iOS uses just 1.4GB of space (installed), a 300% reduction on iOS 8.4.1
•Addition of ‘Proactive’ – Apple’s answer to Google Now predicts information ahead of you asking for it
•Smarter Siri – more support for natural language searches and integration with third party apps
•Improved multitasking – (latest iPads only) – true side-by-side app support and picture-in-picture video support
•Upgraded Apple Maps – detailed public transport has finally been added
•Addition of ‘News’ – Apple’s Flipboard rival with a beautiful reader interface
•Addition of ‘QuickType’ – (iPads only) a new suggestion bar for the iOS virtual keyboard, formatting shortcuts and increased gesture support
•Improved Notes – support for hyperlink previews, photos, attachments and more

iOS 9 Bug Fixes

While iOS 9 focuses primarily on what’s new it also quietly addresses one major iOS 8 bug which has been unresolved for a year: WiFried is no more.

Yes, iOS 9 rips out the networking protocols introduced in iOS 8 and actually goes back to the instruction set used in iOS 7 so finally this infuriating bug can be put to rest.

It also restores full Home Sharing functionality after iOS 8.4 bizarrely ripped out audio streaming.

So Who Gets iOS 9?

One of the best things about iOS 9 is it will be offered to every device which was eligible for iOS 8. This is the first time Apple has not dropped any devices from a new generation of iOS and it is to be applauded (even though it could also be seen as an apology for its problems).

This means iOS 9 eligible devices are:
•iPhone 4S and later
•iPad 2 and later
•iPad mini and later
•iPod touch 5th generation and later

It also goes without saying that all new iOS devices: the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, iPad Pro and iPad mini 4 will all ship with iOS 9.
