Angina Pectoris –a pain and feeling of choking felt in the chest brought on by exercise or exertion
and relieved by rest. It occurs when the blood supply to the heart muscle is inadequate.
Treatment: Diagnosis is usually confirmed in the hospital by electrocardiogram. Treatment involves
rest and avoidance of the exertion that caused angina attack. Medications in the form of glyceryl tri
nitrate are used to bring immediate relief during angina attack. It may be necessary for the patient
to undergo coronary-artery bypass surgery or angioplasty
Causes and risk factors: angina pectoris is caused by an inadequate blood supply to the heart as a
result of damage arteries thus causing severe pains in the chest. Factors thought to contribute to
development of the condition include obesity, diet rich in saturated fat and salt, stress,
atherosclerosis and genetic factors.
