Finally, you’ve decided to dump the 9-5 and be the boss of your own. It feels great to be in control but don’t be deceived it’s going to be a demanding task to run a business of your own.

First things first, you need to pick a business name which is just a tip of the iceberg, but an important one. Investors and customers need to view you positively and be encouraged to invest or patronise you. However, if you think names are not important you could count how many times you come across a fellow named ‘Lucifer’ or a lady named ‘Jezebel’- Get it?!

The name you choose speak volumes of how much of a business savvy you are and your understanding of the world you are about to enter.

So while you are trying to come up with a great name, make sure it meets all the criteria listed below.

Make it Unique & Unforgettable
Technically, this is called stickiness. Of course every company wants a name that strikes a chord and remains with a potential client for years to come. Although challenging as naming trends have remained a fast changing thing.

Avoid Unusual Spellings
It’s always advisable to steer clear of unusual spellings. Some start up founders may try to use unfamiliar spellings to try and make their company name to stand out, however this is a big NO!

Stay with traditional word spelling, and avoid those catchy words that would cause you a lot of explanations later.

Pick A Name That is Easy to Pronounce
Ditch the made up names and crazily made up phrases. Skip acronyms which may be totally unrecognised or mean nothing to people.

When choosing an identity for a company or a product, keep it simple and straightforward.

Pick a starting letter closer to A than Z
While keeping it simple, remember to pick a name whose starting letter is closer to A than to Z.

Algorithms and directory listings work alphabetically so you get to be placed higher up when in directory listings and guess what! Steve Jobs actually used this trick when he picked the name for ‘Apple’ among other reasons, so that it could appear over Atari in the Phone Book.
