Their love was like when Adam saw Eve for the first time, alone in the garden, no music in the air to distract their union, no children to toss to and fro. It was just Adam and eve, All he needed was a companion, someone to walk with, a better half of him to hold his hands and to play with as Adam introduced eve to all the animals in the garden ….its wasn’t about Adam anyway neither was it about eve….it was just about the existence of love between two young lovers who loved themselves deeply. People say “distance break relationship” hmmm It wasn’t like that in their own case instead her heart throb song is” absence makes the heart grow fonder”… despite the distance…their relationship was just like two spirit bounded together…her voice will not stop replaying in his ears like it’s programmed code. But along the line she felt sick, her voice sounded like when my radio battery is low…gradually her body weakened, her love felt bad and his heart beat faster than normal, inside his room with a bed on the floor he will kneel and pray for her good health, whenever he call’s to check on her, he cracks jokes to jeer her up and always urges her to eat and sleep.

On Friday morning, he rose up from bed to hear the voice of her “one and only love” he dialed but the network was weak….on his bed, he groaned “why?” as he rolled from one side to another and still re-dialing the number which doesn’t change the status of the network, he left for work angrily and after some hours, he tried to call his love, it wasn’t reachable…”haa… he shouted” his heartbeat groaned violently like a tornado, he was alone like a sailor in the dark, he sat in his Aeron chair , listening to the sound of the ceiling fan which is working at a higher speed, he was deep in thought and continue to imagine why her number wasn’t available, that was when he remembered…..she had told her before that in her location, there is rotation of electricity…so maybe there was no electricity voltage “he concluded”.
He sighed at that, having given himself a good excuse, and then he decided to call again later after work
…....as he boarded a taxi with 6 other people, all with different body odor, some shouting and complaining, he sat silently with his mind far away.
As the taxi stopped and his legs came out first…he could feel the breath of his street and the sun gradually fading away, he walks his way to the house where noise of his little cousins awaits him, as he entered the house and the children came rushing at him, he just greeted them faintly and walk to his room. A room with a tiled floor and a wardrobe, he fell on the bed like he was hit by a bullet on the forehead showing how tired and exhausted he was, a sweet fresh breeze blow across the room and he slept off.
He woke up at around 9:00pm when everywhere was silent and dark, he was angry with himself, he peeped on his phone which was lying on the bed and he saw two new messages….he quickly pickup the phone thinking she had messaged him, on opening the message, it was MTN…a sigh of anger dropped out of his mouth while dialing her number, It rang! He was so happy while the phone continues to ring, but she didn’t pickup. He smiled and said “she is angry at me, let me try again to show am serious” he did… but to his surprise, she didn’t pickup. He felt stressed and disappointed as he tried and tried again but it was just like a rat race. He stretched his back on the bed and slept off again.
At about 7:00am in the morning, he woke up and the first thing he did was to check his phone for missed calls, he was disappointed to see nothing on the phone screen…so with fast heart beat he dialed her number, she didn’t pickup…again and again and again….she didn’t pickup…no one knows what has happened to her…at an interval of an hour, Mr. lover will dial her number, still the same. His eyes changed color and gathered tears which couldn’t roll down his cheek; he just kept wondering and looking.
At 5:22pm, she finally pickup… pride of anger grew in him as a man and his voice changed as he said “hello”, she replied with a calm sweet voice as if nothing had happened…he forced himself to ask “how are you feeling now?” she responded “am fine” a sigh of relief came on him while he asked the next question, “while didn’t you pick my calls all this while?” she responded “did you call?” at hearing that response he felt like someone hit a big iron chair on his head, but he calmed himself thinking that it was a joke, then he said “ok I didn’t”. she explained to him that a guy was disturbing her with calls which she purposely ignored not knowing that his calls was among too…at hearing that, an anger of jealousy chased his calmness away and shouted at her “do you know how I feel when you don’t pickup? Do you even know what I have passed through? Do you even know what it takes to call you?” she pleaded “sorry, please don’t drop the call, you need to hear something” but the anger was much and he dropped… she called him back but he refused to pick, she called and called, her lover isn’t picking up. He was angry and lonely on his bed, thinking he had been hurt by his lover….he switched off his phone to avoid her calls and even box hit his pillow hard to release his anger….till he slept off.
When he woke up the next morning, he just went to work straight leaving his phone behind though switched on, and when he got back from work, he saw 54 missed calls on the screen. He checked and saw that it was her, he smiled and was happy. As he had accomplished his will, At around 9pm, his phone rang, he was reluctant to even check who was calling thinking that it will be her, His young cousin took the phone and gave it to him…on looking at the screen, he realized it was a strange number so he picked up quickly and suddenly the phone dropped from his hand and he fell to the ground unconscious.
What really happen? That was the question raised when he woke up in the hospital, he couldn’t speak but cried and he continue to cry, if he tries to say something, nothing will come out… the only thing he can do is to cry. His aunt pickup his phone and re-dial the last received number on the phone, and a man pickup, his aunt politely asked what he told her brother.
“there was an accident,” he started “and a young girl was involved, she died instantly….we picked her phone and call her last dial number to break the news, she was travelling from her town to ibadan” the policeman said “while the driver seems drunk and it was evening, he collided with a trailer at the entrance of ibadan” now his aunt get to understand that she was coming to meet him before the accident happened…
Why was she coming? Some asked…..people say maybe she had something important to tell him and he wasn’t picking up calls…..hmmm but where does the title “wrong step” fit in this story? This are questions you should answer….
