It was reported in several Newspapers this morning that President Muhammadu Buhari will head the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. the Public perception about this decision is that, it will enable Mr. president to tackle the perennial corruption that has bedeviled the Ministry over the years. perhaps, as justifiable as it sounds, the truth of the matter is, the current economic problem that we are facing today can be attributed to our dependent on oil as a major source of government revenue. The oil price volatility in the international oil market has affected our revenue generation negatively.

Therefore, every right thinking person should be concerned about how to diversify our economy instead of focusing on the lucrative petroleum industry. If Mr. President really wants to revamp our economy, let him appoint someone else to run the petroleum Ministry, while he handles the Agriculture Ministry for our economic diversification. Except if Mr. President has a different interest in the Ministry.

Recall that the Agricultural sector was the highest employer of labour in the early 1960s before the oil boom and also contributes the highest percentage to our GDP. Again, President Olusegun Obasanjo who is a renowned farmer, abandoned the Agriculture Ministry and managed the petroleum Ministry instead. Yet, no tangible difference was made. Therefore, for me there is a personal interest our leaders pursue in that lucrative Ministry other than fight against corruption.

So, let Buhari handle the Ministry of Agriculture instead of Petroleum Ministry to diversify our economy if really he means well for our country.

this is truly, a positive suggestion, but how many people can reason along this line of thought?

Agriculture is the trade of the patience, Buhari needs quick cash.

For someone who cannot do without cow! You may be correct.
But remember he supervises the PTDF during Abachas dark days rule where they used it as a conduit pipe for embezzlement.
So I am not surprised. He needs to harnessed every opportunity to himself so as to be the only alpha and omega when the oil rigs licences expires soon.
