We all know how important the eyes are as instruments of vision to us, and how important we need to take care of them in order to maintain their functions.

Protecting and maintaining healthy eyes as you age is one of the most important things to do to maintain a good quality of life.

You can ensure your eyes are health with the following tips:

- Eat good Food for a Healthy Vision
Maintaining good eyesight actually starts from the food you eat. Certain nutrients such as vitamin C, Vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and might help ward off vision problems related with ageing such as macular degeneration and cataracts, studies show. Regularly eating these foods can help guarantee you healthy eyes. This list of foods when consume regularly can help in maintaining health eyes:

. Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards
. Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish
. Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources
. Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices
It dosen’t end there yet, A well-balanced diet when eaten also helps you maintain a healthy body weight, which makes you less likely to get diseases associated with obesity e.g. type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is known to be the leading cause of blindness in adults.

- Avoid Exposure to Ultraviolet Rays
An excess exposure to ultraviolet rays makes you more likely to get cataracts and macular degeneration.

- Using the right kind of sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.

- You can choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. If you wear contact lenses, some offer UV protection. It is not a bad idea to wear sunglasses for more protection, though.

- Look away from the Computer Screen
Staring for long hours at your computer or other digital devices can cause major strain on your eyes and can also cause dry eyes, blurry vision, and headaches. To help fight these issues, simply rest your eyes every 20 minutes by looking 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds.

You can also position your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. This allows you to look slightly down at the screen.

- Quit Smoking
Smoking increases the possibility of getting cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration. For the sake of healthy eyes, it’s a wise decision to quit smoking. If you currently smoke, try going for a smoking cessation program.

- Go for regular Eye check up
It is quite easy to ignore seeing an eye doctor when you are not having a noticeable change in your vision or when you are seeing well. Regular eye examinations are not just for people experiencing changes in their vision, it is actually important to detect ‘insignificant’ changes in your eye’s health, and can also help check for other health issues such as diabetes and glaucoma before any symptoms come up.
