Ogun State Police Command has arrested a police corporal for allegedly shooting a commercial bus driver to death at Sagamu tollgate, along Lagos-Benin Expressway.
The Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest of the policeman, saying the suspect would face the wrath of the law.
‪Giving details about the case, he said the divisional police officer of the area informed the commissioner of police that a corporal fired at the driver of a commercial vehicle at Shagamu tollgate.
‪”We therefore arrested the corporal, would make him face the full wrath of the law. We are going to treat the matter departmentally before he would be charged to court for proper prosecution.
‪”The command is not happy with the situation because we have not recorded that for a very long time.
‪”We assure the public and relatives of the deceased that justice would be done. We’ll have a meeting with them to know what the command can do to ensure a good relationship with the family, and also be with them in this time of trials. We want to assure them of justice,” he said.
Folake Egbeuwalo, one of the seven passengers of late Likinyo Olumide’s bus, explained that Mr. Olumide was shot dead after parking his vehicle as was asked to do by the policemen.
‪Ms. Egbeuwalo said on Wednesday that the incident occurred at 9:45 pm on Tuesday, as they were coming from Lagos where they went to buy some goods.
She said they were journeying back to Okitipupa in Ondo State when they were stopped by the police.
“When we reached Sagamu tollgate from Ilemagbo Island, we did not know that there were policemen on the road.
“They asked the driver to park and immediately he parked and came out of the car. The policeman then moved to the other side of the road and gunned him down instantly,” she said.
‪According to Ms. Egbeuwalo, the policemen ran away immediately the man died and later came back and took away the corpse in a Hilux van with registration number: NPF104 OD.
She lamented that all the passengers were abandoned and slept on the high way as none of them could drive the car after the death of the driver.
‪The younger brother to the deceased, Likinyo Solomon, regretted the death of his brother, saying he was survived by six children and pregnant wife.
“I want to see the person that killed my brother and to know what actually happened before he was killed,” he said.
‪However, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Balade Hassan, told journalists on Wednesday that the suspect would face the law.
“The regulation is clear and the constitution is clear about the right to life of all Nigerians. So, if anybody takes the life of anybody be it a policeman or civilian not as provided by the constitution, you will face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
