What Is The Correct Usage Of The Word "Seen" In This Context? by aboyaji(m): 10:37pm On Oct 08, 2015
I just concluded a 54 min call with my friend (a female) .

We were discussing on abstract topics like history, life and finally movies. When we started with movies, she said "have you watched this movie"? And mentioned the title. But she repeated her statement by substituting the word "watch " with the word "seen" and was asking if I knew why she had to use the latter.

She said her lecturer corrected the impression in her school and she had to start using "seen" instead of "watched ".

Abeg, how correct was/is the statement?

Is Lalasticlala the right person to call on or tosyne2much?

Lemme try and see if I can answer this correctly

To "go see something" applies to more than just movies. One can go see a play, an art exhibition, or what's happening somewhere. It's the act of going out somewhere and looking at something. Saying "Let's go see a movie" means that you will go to the movie theatre and watch a movie.

When you are actually sitting in the movie theatre, you are watching the movie.

In summary, to watch a movie is the time or duration spent on the movie (from the beginning to the end) while to see a movie is actually an art of exhibition

For example. Yesterday, I watch the movie titled The Expendables at the threatre and I enjoyed the suspense and intrigues

I want to go to the threatre to see another movie tomorrow

I hope this helps cool

'See' is most suitable, you see with your eyes not watching with your eyes, One sees a game, television programme or a performance. Eg I have seen 'The choice' and 'The walk', those movies are interesting and I enjoin you to 'see' them too.

YOU 'WATCH' A 'FILM'. YOU 'SEE' A 'MOVIE'. That's what my spoken English teacher said the last time we asked in class
