A review of libraries, bookstores, and the internet, would discover and locate, countless articles and books, relating to leadership, and enhancing quality. While there are a variety of approaches and ways to achieve the most desirable results, perhaps the most important and essential needs and characteristics required to be a leader, is to be ready, willing and able to become a quality leader. In my over three decades of identifying, qualifying, training, and consulting to well over a thousand individuals in either actual or potential positions of leadership, I have continuously urged these people to become more multi-dimensional and skilled, and to consider, address and pursue, these three aspects/components thoroughly and in the most productive fashion.

1. Ready: Do you want to become one of the rare, well-prepared leaders, or will you settle for the common, usual, not-ready-for-prime-time sort? What does it mean to be ready? It begins with getting professionally and properly trained in every relevant area, and then differentiating yourself by transforming it to true and meaningful, relevant learning. You must then proactively utilize what you've learned in a way that you put it to practical usage, and gain real experience, that will enhance your skills and understanding, Only a very small percentage of individuals do so effectively enough to be able to become go-to sorts, and thus true experts. One's expertise should lead to superior abilities to analyze what's needed, and then combined with a positive, can-do attitude, in a proactive manner.

2. Willing: Only a small percentage of those who enter leadership positions, ever actually become real leaders! Because doing so is not merely technical or by rote, in nature, it must be seamlessly combined and used in conjunction with a constructive, positive attitude. Realize that this means far more than merely using positive rhetoric and avoiding the negatives (although that is an essential component), but rather, truly believing what one says, and stepping forward, and possessing a willingness to lead by example.

3. Able: Once the first two components are addressed and perfected on a continuous, constant basis, they must be used to their best avail! One's abilities do not automatically make one able, but when ability is used, in synergy with attitude, learning, etc., and possessing the courage to take timely action, understand ramifications, and have the vision to lead others in a mutually significant fashion. Only then will one's stakeholders buy-into the vision and mission of the organization (and you), and care and do more, to assure success and sustainability.
