Difficulty In Getting Placement For Internship In Nigeria by ConfessionsNgr: 11:36am On Oct 16, 2015
This is a cry for help. Pls make our voices heard. Medical doctors, pharmacists, and medical laboratory scientists are wasting away years at home due to difficulty in getting internship placements. Please kindly post this cry for help on your blog to bring wider attention to our plight.
My name is Dr R.E, a medical doctor who graduated from one of the federal universities last year 2014. It's mandatory that we embark on 12months uninterrupted housemanship in various approved hospitals within Nigeria. However due to high number of medical graduates, few number of hospitals approved plus some shady activities of some Chief medical directors of various hospitals, new interns find it virtually impossible to get placements. This has lead to large number of medical doctors staying at home for over two years (the time-limit for provisional licence) without getting placement. Our regulatory organizations have abandoned us including the NMA and MDCN especially after collecting exorbitant dues. I must add that not only medical doctors are affected by this developments. Also pharmacists, medical laboratory scientists, radiologists and physiotherapy graduates are affected too. We want a regulated and efficient method for internship placements in Nigeria. An informal association of these group of individuals (me inclusive) have come up with some solutions which could help ameliorate this situation. It's in the Microsoft Word document I have attached below.
Thanks a lot
Yours faithfully,
Dr R.E.
