TechLector:
This is what we are hearing: Jumia, the Rocket-funded e-commerce outfit in just laid off 300 of its workers in Nigeria.

Mentions of the firings were first seen on Twitter when a user, @duwayah tweeted about it.

1. @Omojuwa @akenade So @JumiaNigeria just decided today was the best day to layoff without prior notice. Is this even legal? @lindaikeji

— adedunmola (@duwayah) October 16, 2015

2. @Omojuwa @akenade @lindaikeji Telling affected staff 2 say they voluntarily resigned @JumiaNigeria Offering as little as 2 weeks pay only

— adedunmola (@duwayah) October 16, 2015

3.@Omojuwa @elnathan #Jumia Sends scores of staff from premises. Collects back company assets, refusing entry to retrive personal belongings — adedunmola (@duwayah) October 16, 2015

What is your take on this?

They can only try that in Nigeria when they know we don't have well implemented labour laws. They dare not try it in even Ghana. Nonsense society.

It’s unclear if @duwayah is one of the affected Jumia staff.

However, if this is true, that’s about 30% of Jumia’s 1000-person strong workforce in Nigeria. Jumia has not commented on the firings and has yet to release any official statement regarding this, but we have reached out to them and expect a comment.

Even on NL, powerful employers have fired their staff and asked them to claim they resigned. I'm sure Seun himself must have done so to some of his own employees too since Nigeria is not a place where employees like that get justice. , it is a sad thing but the thing is, Graduates in Nigeria put up with a lot of shit just to put food on their tables.

Hello Techlector, if the employees come out to say they were fired by Jumia, what will be the next line of action? Can anything be done to help them. I know someone who was fired by his boss after the boss asked him to pretend he resigned voluntarily.

Why have the employees sacked not come out to say they have been sacked?

One of the questions a lot observers on this side of the table are asking is why Jumia is downsizing and the reason why it has done so in the manner being rumoured.

We are still unsure about the firings, but a lot points to the fact that this may be true. For one, the approach in which the firing was rumoured to have been done (and the scale too) is true to Rocket Internet’s script on downsizing. Rocket Internet – the majority investor in Jumia – with the Samwer Brothers at the helms have been known to hire and fire on a whim. In one of many similar actions, Rocket Internet closed some of its offices in Turkey in 2012, firing 400 workers in the process.
