Ridiculous: Nigeria Ranks Third In World's Online Crime! by DKNYtruth(m): 7:50pm On May 01, 2009
Country Manager of Microsoft Nigeria, Emmanuel Onyeje, said in Abuja on Thursday that Nigeria ranks third on the list of the world's top 10 online crimes spots.

He said in addition to the prevalence of cyber crime, software piracy rate in Nigeria currently stands at 82 per cent.

Quoting a 2007 Internet Crime Report, Onyeje stated that with the prevalence of cyber crime among a sizeable number of Nigerian youth, there is an urgent need for concern.

The Microsoft manager made these observations at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations.

He lamented that internet scams, identity theft, financial scams and software piracy undermine Nigeria's economic development.

He also stated that such acts further reduce the country's ability to attract foreign investments.

Onyeje explained that signing the MoU would strengthen the efforts to combat internet crime and software piracy in Nigeria.

According to him, the MoU signed by Microsoft and the EFCC builds on an earlier one of 2005 that focused on increased cooperation, capacity building and enforcement in the area of internet safety.

Onyeje said the two bodies have also agreed to combine efforts to develop programmes that would educate the public on cyber crime and software piracy while identifying, investigating and prosecuting suspected defaulters.

Also speaking, Chairman of the EFCC, Farida Waziri, disclosed that the initial MoU with Microsoft which expired in 2008 resulted in several arrests and convictions of internet fraudsters in Nigeria.
