Reasons Why Our Nigeria Student Prefers Schooling Abroad??? by sydneycruze(m): 7:37am On Oct 22, 2015
WHY DO NIGERIAN STUDENTS PREFER SCHOOLING ABROAD OVER OUR OWN NIGERIAN INSTITUTIONS AND REASONS THEY EXCEL BETTER OVER THERE THAN OUR STUDENT HERE IN NIGERIA
We all know that the media often celebrate and till today keeps celebrating the impressive performance of Nigerians who excel very well abroad most especially in Europe and America .It has become a trending issues or rather news on social networks and this is not getting any critics on why a Nigerian schooling in a foreign institution usually comes out top. Unfortunately, our Nigerian institution here is not rated among the top-notch universities in ranking. The latest rankings of universities according to, Nigerian university was not among the first 1000 and was not among the first 20 in Africa.
Xo the question is that why do they prefer going there? Is it that we do not have the basic amenities or standard to meet up to their requirements? Is it that they do not want to explore their potentials here in Nigeria? Or is it d media attention they will receive from the outside world? There are xo many reasons and why our own Nigerian students like schooling outside and why they excel well in their grades than students who school in Nigeria. I will be discussing some likely problems and solutions to why Nigerian students perform better abroad and also why they prefer schooling there.
First and foremost, let look at the system and structure of our universities here in Nigeria. We have a bizarre system that is not only archaic but also kills the moral intense of its students. A good Nigeria university is supposed to be of a high standard and torturous. But as it is the case has been reversed. In the system today, students write in a very deplorable condition, even sometimes students do write exam in hospitals when they fall ill which is very appalling. A system in which students see their grades even before results are been posted on result boards. Woe betides any student who calls for a remark of an exam script even when such student feel he or she has a good grade in. sometimes ,students are been sabotaged by students for one silly reasons or the other. Marks are been deducted from students grade because of an
offence that may possibly does not warrant such. Such case leads to why students become uninspired and uninterested in the whole system.
Another reason on why Nigerian students prefer schooling abroad is the problem of strike. The indefinite strike rocking our Nigerian institutions has really has really caused havoc in our Nigeria institution, most especially in the government or rather state-owned institutions. Students are only intimated on the month and year of their matriculation, no one seems to be predicting on the date they will matriculation because of the indefinite strike ravaging our Nigeria institution. If the Academic staff union of universities(ASUU) is not on strike today, tomorrow will be the turn of Non-academic staff union(NASU),they have this myopic feeling strike is the only way in which their demands are meant, rather than dialoguing with the federal government on issues bothering them. An academic session which is pre-planned to run for seven months will end up running through ten months because it has been sabotaged and paralyzed by indefinite strike. Let take for instance, the 6 month strike that shoot the entire nation during Jonathan’s administration, the impediments and all other social vices that strike led to; as will not go a long way helping the formation of our institution and as such have adverse effect on the student and also will affect the academic system.
Also, corruption is a major impediment that if not aborted, has the ability to wreck or rather destabilize the whole educational system of our country Nigeria . Students in our tertiary institution sometimes have to pay money to lecturers to gain admission, knowing fully well that they did not meet up the necessary requirements of getting admission. After the ruins, they pave their way in bribing security agents so as to continue cheating in an examination and also commit other appaling characters in school. A good Nigeria institution is said to be of high standard by which students should study very hard and boastfully be proud of getting admission but today the whole system is down. Corruption has eaten deeply in the hearts of our lecturer to the extent that if a student does not purchase a textbook written and published by the lecturer taking that particular course, he or she is likely to have a very low grade despite been impressive in that particular course. To make matters worse, there is no check and balance to curtail on this corrupt practice. Sometimes, students are even been afraid to report to the school management so as not to be victimized by other lecturers. Still under the issue of corruption is the practice of admitting more students beyond the proposed requirement of the school. For example, if a department that can only accommodate 1000 student but out of corruption and greed on the part of the management decides to admits 4000, it is obvious that none of the students will be able to benefit from the facilities available and thus will inadequately affect the development of the institution.
Another problem that makes most Nigeria student to prefer studying abroad over our own Nigeria institution is funding. An institution that wants to be relevant must always be In line with global development. Laboratories ,libraries ,equipment ,facilities, and other basic amenities that contribute that contribute to academic development must be updated. This can only be achieved if the institutions receive adequate funding of the institutions. In our country today, we see situation whereby politicians are other governmental agents lavishing public funds, the education budget is pityingly low for our Nigerian universities. To be able to compete with international institutions at the top, our universities must be bereaved of funding.
Another reason I will be giving is school-society connection. Nigeria institutions operate at isolated realms that totally disconnect them from the society that they exist in. our Nigeria students lack practical knowledge of what they are taught. Institutions only operate in lecture theatre, abolishing environmental experience like field trips and others.
With the government of our country Nigeria and all well meaning citizens could come in one and bridge the gap in our universities, I think NIGERIA STUDENTS will be proud of schooling in our institutions.
