Project ready in 2019

Construction works have finally commenced on the multi-billion naira Lekki Deep Seaport project in Lagos.

The management of the Lekki Port Lagos Free Trade Zone Enterprise (LFTZ), which disclosed this at the weekend said the N325 billion project is expected to be completed some time in 2019.

The Managing Director of Lekki Port, Mr. Haresh Aswani, while speaking in Lagos on Saturday said the total value of the marine and land infrastructure for the port was put at N156 billion.

He added that the contractors for the project, the EPC Contractors and China Harbour Engineering LFTZ Enterprise, have already received an advance payment of N1.42 billion from the Lagos State government.

“Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise (LPLE) is issuing the Notice-to-Proceed to our EPC Contractor to commence full construction activities for Lekki Deep Seaport situated within LFTZ in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

This is a major milestone on the project that marks the beginning of the 41-month construction period for the largest maritime project in the country. Our EPC Contractors are China Harbour Engineering LFTZ Enterprise (CHELE), a subsidiary of China Harbour Engineering Company, one of the largest maritime contractors in the world. The total contract value for construction of all marine and land-side infrastructure for Lekki Port is $792 million and we are flagging off the construction today by releasing an advance payment to CHELE for them to commence full construction on the project. This phase of the project will cost a total of $1.65 billion,” he explained.

Aswani added that the project is scheduled to for completion in 2019, pointing out that the Lekki Port will be the deepest seaport in the sub-Saharan Africa with a draft depth of 16.5 meters.

“Once ready, the port facility, with its state-of-the-art infrastructure, would be able to handle post-Panamax container vessels of up to 10,000 TEUs capacity. The port will commence operations with an annual throughput capacity of 1.5 million TEUs and shall quickly ramp it up to 2.7 million TEUs. In addition, Lekki Port will be equipped to handle around 16.7 million MT liquid cargo and 4.0 million MT dry bulk cargo annually.

“As a port authority, we see potential for growth and strive to make it a reality at all times. A port with a depth of 16.5 metres will allow bigger vessels to berth and the port will enable our ports be enormously competitive due to economy of scale and will have significant positive macro economic impact on Nigeria in terms of employment, taxes and royalties.

As we began the consummation of our strategic alliance with the promoters of this project and look towards a bright future, we assure you that the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) will not waver in its continued support for the project.”

The event was attended by the Managing Director, NPA, Alhaji Sanusi Bayero; Head, Corporate Finance, Standard Chartered Bank, West Africa, Mr. Leke Ogunlewe; Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mrs. Olusola Oworu, among others.
