Across the globe, technology and the internet has increasingly overhauled hitherto, the conventional ways and methods of doing things and thus have led to a consequent increase in the efficiency and effectiveness of systems and operations.
Mobile payment has been described as an alternative payment method. Instead of paying with cash, cheque, or credit cards, a consumer can use his mobile phone to pay for a wide range of services and hard goods. It also encompasses any payment where the mobile phone is involved in the initiation and/or confirmation of the payment.
Up until now, it can be seen that there are exceeding untapped opportunities in the 'mobile world'. The birth of mobile phones, gave rise to telecommunication, which has also mobile money operation as its offspring. One of the advantages of this innovation is that it brings about financial inclusion for all and sundry as long as you have your mobile phone, especially for the unbanked and underbanked.
According to the CBN statistics, it is estimated that there are approximately 76 million bank accounts, with an estimated population of approximately 170 million people in Nigeria. Invariably, a large portion of the population are unbanked. This among others, predicates the need for mobile money operation in Nigeria and Africa generally. Already, Kenya is said to have spearheaded the Mobile Money Operation (MMO), with their M-pesa controlling over 70% payments and contributing over 40% to the GDP of the country.
In Nigeria, zoranga.com which is a upcoming MMO is taking the lead. Zoranga processes payments using MTN airtime or it's own zorapin, a very unique innovation in Africa. Zoranga also makes savings easy for it's users through its s-wallet package.
Nothing is as exciting as making transactions at your convenience.
