Okay so have been working freelance for months, even years now, and you have already seen it all and of course you know it all. Right? Well, maybe not so true. Whatever the case, whether you starting out as a newbie or veteran of the freelance industry. Here are a couple of tricks to help stay ahead of the curve and help your adapt and make the most of the unique and challenging working environment that is Nigeria, stay on top of your game and utilize every opportunity as they pop up along the way.

1) start your day early; yes you are freelancer, you work from home and that means you don’t have to join in the monday-Friday ‘madness’ of people trying to get to their places of work in time. But hey, even in the freelance world the early bed gets the biggest worm. An early start to your day quite naturally equals an early finish which in turn equals happy clients, plenty of referrals and more jobs and more money. An early finish has the additional benefit of leaving you with lots of truly work free hours to spend on whatever interests you may have.

2) Begin with the simplest tasks; always try to finish with the smaller, simpler and probably less important tasks first, this allows you to clear out the clutter and create physical and mental workspace as you go along, this leaves you with room to focus all of your attention and energy on the greater tasks and tackle them with maximum concentration.

3) Plan your day around your realities; it’s no news that the public utilities (power, water, telecommunication) are in barely available or in poor supply in our dear country. Freelancers must learn to create a work schedule that takes into consideration all of these realities. For instance freelancers (even if they are non night-persons) must learn to stay up or work late into the night if it guarantees them a stable internet connection or a steady supply of power over a reasonable length of time.

4) Daily reviews; many freelancers have come to value the importance of a daily planner; those little notes of to-do lists we make at the start of each day to help us on track. But an equally important but less utilized resource is a daily review. A review at the end of the day tells us what we have achieved, shows us what is left to be done. A proper review also tells you what works best and what doesn’t. Going forward it also provides a blue print on how best to work smart.

5) One step at a time; nearly all freelancers are self employed entrepreneurs, and they inevitably have to deal with the harsh business environment in Nigeria, the stress of work in less than ideal conditions, the anxiety of finding and keeping new jobs in the midst of current soaring unemployment levels. All of these can put a strain on a freelancer’s performance and career. In these regard staying healthy is paramount. It is important for a freelancer to get adequate sleep, eat right, exercise and enjoy a stable healthy relationship. Above all a freelancer must learn to laugh at their own mistakes, learn from them, pray always and take each day as it comes.

As an experienced freelancer, I often use jolancer.com, fiverr.com and freelancer.com. I get many gigs from Nigerian companies and individuals, through the first one especially because it's free for Nigerians
