Everyday our bodies are invaded by several elements. They attack, fight and seek to destroy. Top among these dangerous invaders are free radicals.

Free radicals are simple substances in our body with an electron missing. They are formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules, that is, when oxygen combines with certain substances in our body – a process known as oxidation. Once formed, these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction.
In an effort to become ‘normal’ again they seek out other chemical structures in our bodies from where they can steal an electron. In our bloodstream, they will steal an electron from any atom, without discrimination. This creates another free radical, and another and another…soon, a good deal of damage is done and the body’s health really begins to falter.

After they ‘acquire’ an electron, the chemical structure or tissue from where they ‘stole’ the electron is left seriously damaged. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs.

Oxidation is unavoidable! So long as we breathe oxygen, there will be oxidation in our bodies and free radicals will always continue. Air pollution, second hand smoking, lack of nutrients in our diets due to processing and over cooking, artificial radiation, toxins and chemicals in our foods inadvertently expose us to free radicals.

To prevent free radicals damage, the body has a defence system of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are intimately involved in the prevention of cellular damage – the common pathway for cancer, aging and a variety of diseases. In simple terms, antioxidants neutralize free radicals by voluntarily giving out one of their electrons to a free radical molecule.

Antioxidants do this without hurting themselves. It is nature’s way of keeping the oxidation process in check. Cholesterol is one of the body’s natural antioxidants. This means the body manufactures it to guard against the oxidizing damage by free radicals.

In the nutrition field, many have concluded that cholesterol is not the enemy. High-serum cholesterol (LDL) results from the imbalance in the body. Enzyme antioxidants, along with vitamins found naturally in herbs, are the answer to the body’s need for nutrients with which to rebuild itself.

Natural foods rich in antioxidants include; continue here- http://jessynaphtali..com.ng/2015/11/how-to-conquer-free-radicals.html
