38. Without a shoulder harness, the jolt of the impact may cause your 10-pound head to snap your neck. It's possible that it may even fall off. There have been reports of waist belts severing plane crash victims in half. http://www.viralnova.com/flight-facts/ 2 Likes 1 Share

39. If a plane needs to make an emergency landing, a pilot may decide to dump fuel from its wings. While it’s not very common, it is a safety procedure to keep the plane from experiencing an overweight landing. The fuel usually evaporates before it reaches the ground. 1 Like 1 Share

40. Flight Attendants: Seniority Means Shorter Skirts. Our tenure on the job doesn’t just determine which routes we fly and which days we get to take off; it also affects the hierarchy in our crashpad, an apartment shared by as many as 20 flight attendants. Seniority is the difference between top or lower bunk, what floor your bed is on, and just how far away your room is from noisy areas such as doors or stairwells. 2 Likes

41. WE CAN BE TOO TALL OR TOO SHORT TO FLY. During Pan Am’s heyday in the 1960s, there were strict requirements for stewardesses: They had to be at least 5-foot-2, weigh no more than 130pounds, and retire by age 32. They couldn’t be married or have children, either. As a result, most women averaged just 18 months on the job. In the 1970s, the organization Stewardesses for Women’s Rights forced airlines to change their ways. The mandatory retirement age was the first thing to go. By the 1980s, the marriage restriction was gone as well. These days, as long as flight attendants can do the job and pass a yearly training program, we can keep flying. As for weight restrictions, most of those disappeared in the 1990s. Today, the rules are about safety. Flight attendants who can’t sit in the jump seat without an extended seat belt or can’t fit through the emergency exit window cannot fly. The same goes for height requirements. We have to be tall enough to grab equipment from the overhead bins, but not so tall that we’re hitting our heads on the ceiling. Today, that typically means between 5-foot-3 and 6-foot-1, depending on the aircraft. http://m.mentalfloss.com/article.php?id=31044 http://emgn.com/entertainment/the-insane-instagram-craze-proving-cabin-crews-do-have-a-funnybone/ cc: Dominique 1 Like 1 Share

42. Something is always broken on your plane. The plane you’re about to fly on is broken. Without a doubt, something on that plane is broken. They’re big, complex machines, and they break all the time. The good news is that anything major will have a backup or two or three, and will generate a message in the cockpit to alert the crew so they can take the appropriate action such as diverting, turning on manual backups, or calling maintenance if they’re still on the ground. Most of the time it’s trivial things like reading lights, coffee makers, and cabin trim. Don’t let this prevent you from flying though, they are incredibly safe machines. Even when they have fairly serious malfunctions, they are usually able to get back down safely. 2 Likes

43. Aspiring commerical pilots generally invest more than $70,000 in their education and clock an average of 4,000 hours of experience before they are hired by Air Canada. * Once their flight simulator training is complete, pilots move directly to piloting fully-loaded passenger airplanes. They are, however, accompagnied by line indoctrination pilots for their first few flights. After a second test by a supervisor pilot, they’re fully cleared to fly on their own. * Pilots are sent back into the simulator at least every eight months to renew their license; every six months for those who command the Boeing 777. * Pilots can fly only one type of aircraft at a time. Before acquiring a license to command a different model, they must go through 8 to 12 weeks of training. The process includes “ground school”, pre-simulator mockup flights and simulator training. * Pilots may spend long periods of time away from home. To keep their loved ones close, they’ll often keep photos of their family or spouses in the inside lining of their hat. * Pilots aren’t allowed to share food. As a safety precaution, pilots order and eat different crew meals while on flight. source: gofar.aircanada.com/en/up-in-the-air/10-facts-you-didnt-know-about-pilots/ 1 Like 2 Shares

Search Teams Were Looking In The Wrong Place For Five Days: As shown in the map below, the plane was last tracked at the Strait of Malacca between the Indonesian and Malaysian coasts. The plane turned around near Vietnam when it’s transponder stopped working and headed hundreds of miles away from its original flight path. Search teams had been searching the place where the plane’s transponder stopped working instead of near the Strait of Malacca. 1 Like 1 Share

All Boeing 777 Commercial Jets Are Equipped With Explosion-Proof Black Box Recorders And Can Transmit Location Data For 30 Days. These black boxes are designed to withstand any explosion from the plane itself. The bomb-proof structures hold digital recordings of the conversations in the cockpit and also detailed flight data and control surface data. The reason why investigators are having such a hard time finding the aircraft is because they cannot pick up any signal from its black box recorder. Usually, homing in on the signal leads to the plane itself, but the absence of any signal means that the black box, a device meant to withstand explosions, has vanished, malfunctioned or been destroyed by some unfathomable power. 2 Likes 2 Shares

There Are Parts of Aircraft That Are Buoyant And Naturally Float On Water. In past cases when a plane crashes into the sea, many parts of theplane are found floating on the surface because they are buoyant. No such debris has been found yet, which has baffled search and rescue teams even more. Even if there was an explosion on board while the plane was in mid air, the debris would have fallen over a much greater area and more easily spotted.
