Hi guys,

Its common knowledge that the IT sector in Nigeria is expanding; but it seems, in terms of the job market, there are more vacancies for software developers than for database administrators.

Please guys working in an IT firm/sector should enlighten us, are companies not using MYSQL or SQL server?

Thanks.

I think the outcome of your research is wrong , every company should have a payroll system and payroll systems require databases

Most Software Developers tend to double as Database Administrators, so I guess its the classic case of killing two birds with one stone.

Specialization as opposed to versatility and adaptability is not favoured in an emerging market like the Nigerian Software landscape.

Dear OP,

Database administrator will always be in demand for those that are prepared for the job. To be hopeful and successful in the database administrator's' space, you must know how to administer either a Windows OS (operating system) or any of the Unix variant (Linux, Sun Solaris, AIX Unix, HP Unix etc).

Wish you the best.

Just upgrade to 12c Engineered systems. Lean Exa-data and Exalytics...... Then you will see how much more relevant you will be to most organizations

Add C# or java to your skills.

Also as a DBA Oracle is a necessary skill Nigeria

Hello bro, I would try to help u as best as i can so let's take it one at a time.

Who's is a dba?
Someone who you can liken to the architect of a data storage / retrieval system and who uses tools withing the system to further administer(write db scripts, backup strategy, recovery, failover, etc)

Does Nigeria need DBAs ? Obviously, yes! But we don't have the system in place. Quick example is the case of data redundancy here and there, NCC,NIMC,INEC, NPC all this guys collect same / similar data but don't keep it in sameplace (data warehouse) they all keep it in most cases on a system not even designated as a db server, no specialized recovery or data usage plan. (Believe me I have seen this) so often times, the data just sits locally as it is not even queried except for simple occasional lookups as presented by the app developer. This area is deep to discuss here but my point is, the developer is smart enough to plan a db to simply allow storage of data his application requires and does not require special db needs whilst his app yet does what the nigerian client wants. Moreso because the nigerian system does not have that scanerio for d dba yet.

The Nigerian Dba? He hardly even administer the db, I have seen instance where coy's that use 'large' data hav the 'real' dba guy in yankee send db scripts to the 9ja guy to run, or even administers it remotely, most cases the dbservers in 9ja are just replication/caching servers, transaction are hardly run against it. My point? Even the big guys that use data do not leave it to the 9ja dba to adminsiter.

Don't want to give more negtives so here are some advice:
1. Its notenough to b a dba in 9ja, add more to it
2. This days everyone is shifting to NoSQL, shift ur learning too, IoT / IoE *internet of* will make you /us all to do so
3. Get certified and make sure u av both the technical knw how
4. Network, join groups,
5. download large volume data to play with
6. Don't focus on a dba job alone, get any other
7. If u realy want to babysit / manage data for real, look for a junior dba positionin a large org (multinational) and just play around without alltering their data (that's even if u have permission)

Later bro, best wishes

In Nigeria knowing just SQL isn't good enough to you might have to add some other programming skills to that like C# and you'd be more respected if you are knowledgeable in Linux. You should be looking at big organization like banks, places that data centers and have to handle customer queries, telecom too

When you say Database Administrator you are being vague! I'm sure you didn't study that in school. Do you hold a bachelor's degree or a masters? Which product certification are you proficient in? Oracle 11g, Oracle 12c, ICCP, No SQL or Microsoft SQL? Are you fresh out of school or do you have some experience? In Nigeria you better be one of the best or be self-employed, the market is not friendly enough for an average Joe. Just so you know there are different Database specialized fields and Database Administration is one of the basic ones.

Database Administrator (DBA): Responsible for installing, configuring and maintaining a database management system (DBMS). Often tied to a specific platform such as Oracle, MySQL, DB2, SQL Server and others.
•Database Developer: Works with generic and proprietary APIs to build applications that interact with DBMSs (also platform specific, as with DBA roles).
•Database Designer/Database Architect: Researches data requirements for specific applications or users, and designs database structures and application capabilities to match.
•Data Analyst/Data Scientist: Responsible for analyzing data from multiple disparate sources to discover previously hidden insight, determine meaning behind the data and make business-specific recommendations.
•Data Mining/Business Intelligence (BI) Specialist: Specializes in dissecting, analyzing and reporting on important data streams, such as customer data, supply chain data, transaction data and histories, and others.
•Data Warehousing Specialist: Specializes in assembling and analyzing data from multiple operational systems (orders, transactions, supply chain information, customer data and so forth) to establish data history, analyze trends, generate reports and forecasts, and support general ad hoc queries.

success is like masturbation, it can only be achieved by the works of the hands. it's not by leaving Nigeria bro.. u wanna go to America for instance & be a cleaner or do other petty jobs? then call dat success? uncool bro. I know our govt over here has failed to provide the basic things (electricity, road network etc..) necessary for a business to thrive.. but i feel being in ur home country is a better option. Remember, pple who are poor are those who hv failed to find solutions to other people's problems.

If I were you I would put together a proposal as an independent contractor, especially for Government offices, NGO, and International Conglamorates and tell them you can change their lives. Most Government offices still working with paper and files. They don't even know they need you.

I'm a DBA and can relate to your submission.

I studied oracle in Nigeria,MySQL and SQL server in the US. Reaping the benefits now.

Having said these, @OP, if you are very good with hands on check www.dice.com . You can get sponsorship!

As par Nigeria, not sure about the opportunities for a DBA. But a lot of companies in Nigeria use databases.

I must say DBA is an emerging field in Naija. In the US it's very lucrative and the average income for an administrator is btw. $68 000 a year to $120 000.the employers want you to have certification but it's added advantage if you have a degree or an associate decree. You don't have to be a guru in computers to be certified, just logic or common sense, and the willingness to be on call anytime or sit behind the system for sometime long periods. You could study in your own Microsoft database administrators books on line or purchase from book stores or cisco (which is more expensive).by and large. The job is simply a very sensitive one and you need to be very careful as data is very valuableasy to many organisations. .Finally as we migrate to digital world more organizationso will embrace the need to jettison file base system and embrace database which is more secure and devoid of redundancy.
