The poem below is dedicated to students all over the world that are going through hard times on campus.God will see you through.The poem is based on a true story concerning a male student in Ibadan some years ago.There is always a way,if you wait long enough.



I learned that you are late
victim of what you ate.
Tired,weary and burnt-out
you opted to check out.

We were glad
when you got entry
to higher school
on your way to the future cool.
So full of hope and dreams
of finishing in the golden streams.

You were the object of ridicule
by other students who thought it cool
to laugh at your thread bare shirts
and your worn-out shoes.

You kept up the fight
hanging on,day by day
through the hunger pangs
and the misery of unsettled bills.

I don't know how it felt
to go days unfed.
But I was told
you wrote the last test
with a stomach rumbling with emptiness
like lightning roaming the empty skies
with no object to strike.

Sometimes,you cried in your sleep
Like a man reliving fierce battles on distant shores.
Rolling from edge to edge
in fitful sleep
goaded by penury.

To your credit
you persevered
Then your will broke
when life's egg you broke
on death's hardened sickle.

It pained us all
for the man who first saw you
dangling on the cursed rope
came with your letter of scholarship
granted by a generous donor
who could no longer watch you cry.

We could not bring you back
But if you could look back
You would have seen the help you missed
by hair's breadth
'cause you gave up
before reaching the tape you were meant to breast.
