WAEC Releases Nov/dec WASSCE Results by abagram(m): 3:10am On Dec 18, 2015
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Thursday released the Nov/Dec West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) taken by 237,154 candidates.
But WAEC management for the first time decided to conceal the statistics of candidates who obtained five credits including English Language and Mathematics in the private candidate exam.
Attempt by Journalists to get the statistics proved abortive as the new Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Isaac Adenipekun, insisted that the results of candidates with five credits including English and Maths were available but would reflect the true picture of the general performance.
Announcing the release of the results of the Nov/Dec 2015 WASSCE, the HNO, Mr. Adenipekun flanked by top management staff of the council said a total of 237,154 candidates sat for the exam made up of 124,512 male and 112, 642 female candidates.
Adenipekun who performed his first official task of releasing WAEC results, stressed 235, 542 candidates, representing 99.32 per cent had their results fully processed while 1, 612 others (0.68 per cent) have few of other subjects still being processed due to some errors.
He explained 79,490 candidates, representing 33.51 per cent obtained six credits and above, 113, 573 others (47.88 per cent) recorded five credits, 146, 253 candidates (61.67 per cent) obtained credits in four subjects.
Other statistics include 175,718 candidates, representing 74.09 per cent obtained credits and above in three subjects while a total of 200,304 candidates (84.46 per cent) obtained credits and above in two subjects.
The new WAEC boss noted that the results of 28,768 candidates, representing 12.13 per cent are being withheld for further investigation in connection with various cases of examination malpractice.
His words: ‘‘The reports of the investigations will be presented to the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) of the council for consideration. The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates in due course.’’
Adenipekun disclosed that candidates who sat for the examination should check their performance on the council’s results website: www.waecdirect.org within 24 hours.
According to him, as part of the efforts of the council to continue to protect the integrity of its examinations, and to remain many steps ahead of perpetrators of examination malpractice, WAEC management deployed another cutting-edge technology in the conduct of its examinations called “CredenceOne”.
‘’It is the intersection of mobile communications and biometric technology. It is a mobile biometric identification and verification system, built on the Android Operating System. Using “CredenceOne” is as simple as using a mobile phone. It is used to initiate and complete the biometric verification of candidates’ fingerprints. The device is programmed to compare the scanned fingerprint template with the initial templates captured during registration and display the candidate’s details to check impersonation.
‘’The system also takes candidates’ attendance and automatically sends the records online to the remote central server for reporting. With this innovation, we can boldly say that WAEC, Nigeria now has its biometric fingerprint identification and verification system on a mobile device’’, he explained.
On the demand by Journalists to make available the statistics of candidates with five credits including English Language and Mathematics, the WAEC boss said ‘’it is missing leading to judge the performance of candidates with five credits (English and Maths) in Nov/Dec WASSCE. However, the statistics is available for researchers.
He continued: ‘’The idea of pass and failure in Nov/Dec WASSCE is different from the May/June school exam. I have refrained from giving the statistics of those who obtained five credits including English and Maths because it does reflect the true performance of candidates in the exam. Majority of the candidates sat for the exam to make up their credits for admissions into tertiary institution.’’
The HNO commended the staff of the council, for their dedication to duty and contribution to the successes recorded during the conduct of the examination, marking of scripts and processing of the results of the Nov/Dec 2015 WASSCE.
