Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme may be facing a new hurdle following reports the struggling Championship side are busy scouring the market for another keeper.
Wolves occupy the 11th position in the second tier of English football’s standings, with goalkeeping duo Ikeme and Emiliano Martinez getting a lot of stick for errors.
Ikeme, who has been impressive for the Super Eagles, played second fiddle to on-loan Arsenal’s Martinez until the Argentine was sidelined by a knee injury last month.
The 29-year-old Nigeria custodian has made 11 starts for the Kenny Jackett’s side in the absence of Martinez, who is expected to return to action next month.
But reports on Tuesday claimed promotion-seeking Wanderers had joined the race to sign Manchester United keeper Sam Johnstone in the January transfer window.
The 22-year-old England junior international began the season as deputy to Argentina keeper Sergio Romero but was demoted and sent to Preston on loan after David De Gea signed a new four-year deal with the Red Devils in September.
According to HITC, the England Under-20 team star’s coming will spark competition for a starting spot in Wolves’ goalkeeping department if the Wanderers eventually sign Johnstone.
Meanwhile, out-of-favour Nigeria winger Victor Moses is expected to return to action from the injury he sustained during West Ham’s goalless draw with Manchester United (at Old Trafford on December 5) against Liverpool at Upton Park on Saturday.
West Ham manager Slaven Bilic also said Dimitri Payet and Winston Reid could make their return against the Reds.
“Hopefully some of the players will be back now, against Liverpool,” talksport quoted Billic as saying on Tuesday.
“Payet, Reidy, Moses. It’s only Diafra Sakho who we will be without for another four or five weeks.”
