Lifestyle is the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standard, economic level that together constitutes the mode of living of an individual or group. It is a composite of motivation, needs, wants, and is influenced by factors such as culture, family, peer groups, and social class. Lifestyle is expressed in both work and leisure patterns and in activities, interests, opinions, values, and allocation of income.
Simply put, lifestyle is someone’s’ way of living, the thing that a particular person or group of people do. It reflects ones attitude towards healthy eating, alcohol, smoking, hours of watching television or surfing the internet, method of problem solving, hours of physical activities, hours of sleep, stress management, etc. Lifestyle can either brings satisfaction, happiness, and good health, or leads to depression, sadness, and illness. It can either be healthy or unhealthy based on a person’s choice of food, activity, and behaviour.
What is Unhealthy Lifestyle?
Unhealthy lifestyle is defined as a lifestyle where a person engages in activities that are known to be detrimental to health. This includes smoking, unhealthy eating habits such as excessive eating; eating of junks; skipping breakfast etc,, lack of regular physical activity, not maintaining healthy weight, heavy drinking of alcohol, Insufficient sleep etc. All lifestyles which are unhealthy are detrimental to health and contribute to illnesses and life threatening diseases such as heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, obesity. For example, smoking is responsible for 90 % of lung cancer, death and 80-90% percent of emphysema (abnormal accumulation of air in tissues especially the lungs), and chronic bronchitis death according to the American Lung Association. Cigarette smoking contains over 4,800 chemicals, 69 percent of which are known to cause cancer, and smoking also contributes to heart disease.
What is Healthy Lifestyle?
Healthy lifestyle is one that helps to keep and improve health and wellbeing. It is mostly associated with adequate nutrition, regular physical activity, proper sleeping pattern, healthy weight management, creating a supportive environment of people who cares for you and respect you, proper stress management, and putting an end to unhealthy lifestyle practices. An healthy lifestyle has both short and long term health benefits. For example, adopting a healthy lifestyle such as eating adequate diet, taking regular exercise, and monitoring a healthy weight etc. can add years to your life, and prevent or delay the onset of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.
