HOLE IN HEART

“Stab the body and it heals, but injure the heart and the wound lasts a lifetime.”
― Mineko Iwasaki

All I wanted was a selfie with you pouting
But you started a fight and kept shouting

Why was your love a battle field
Why was your heart too cold to yield

These questions, in my head keep spinning
I guess the answers lie in the very beginning

The first time I saw you was on the Facebook
A beauty that warranted a second look

With all your tempting curves and angles
You stood at akimbo revealing your bangles

You wore this smile that remained a wonder
A wonder that led my mind to wander

In your lust, I was lost
Finding you, my heart was the cost

My moments with you were breathtaking
But the memories left behind are heartbreaking

You tip-toed away without a trace
Leaving me with a heart plagued with space

You left a hole in my heart, I felt I was dying
I know I should be strong and I've been trying

I heard soon you would be wearing a ring
I hope you've tamed your love bug not to sting

As he gives you his heart in whole
I pray you don't return it to him too with a hole

I SEE SMILES

I see smiles everyday while working at my workshop
A contagious nuisance whose spread is my job to stop

Smile of a sickle cell child in excruciating painful crisis
As his blood cells accelerate its process of lysis

Smile of a soldier whose limbs got amputated
As he wakes to the reality of a dream truncated

Smile of a nursing mother who just lost her only child
As she revisits land of childlessness, so lonely, yet wild

Smile of a fiancée whose partner tested positive as a carrier
As she weighs her options against the newly found barrier

Smile of a newly married, beautiful young lady, full of life
As she hears her past life style has made her fruitless as a wife

Smile of a father of four with a late stage cancer
As he looks into my eyes searching for an answer

Lost in my thoughts within the walls of the call room
I puzzle on the cause of these smiles at looming doom

Could these smiles be a sign of denial of the true expression
Emotions bottled up in confinement of religious delusion

Could they be a surrender to the piercing sword of fate
The monster that robs us off joy, the inevitable syndicate

Could they be a desire not to go down without a good fight
After all, doctors are but humans, we can't always be right

I remember my tutor's words, "you can't save all, you ain't God"
"It is only the Creator that has the answer to every odd."

HEROS AT NIGHT

The cool breeze kissed my wearied body as the rain continued to fall
I prayed for the impossible, "God please let this be a calm night call"

But the scream from the tyres of a car, as it halted suddenly, just outside
Confirmed my prayer was a Gethsamane prayer, my eyes opened wide

"Doctor! Doctor!!" A disturbed woman cried out with a tone of urgency
As a bloodclothed boy was wheeled into the accident and emergency

With no Cinderella shoes, no Harry Potter magical wand, just a ward coat
I answered the Hippocratic call with a stethoscope dangling on my throat

What happened? I asked the woman. Sleeves rolled up, gloves on.
The woman cried, "he was shot, please don't let him die, he's my son."

He was shot by the police while going to view a late night football match
They shot my boy, but real criminals are out there, they refused to catch

When we approached them, they said the guilty one was aloof
Now they are saying, he didn't shoot him, that where is my proof

Examining the boy, his condition was critical, he had a patent bleeder
And with a second delayed then our chances would be more slender

"Your son needs an emergency surgery." I reported to the mother
He has lost too much blood, he can't afford to lose any further

Theatre set, all scrubbed, on the boy's chest theatre light fell
The surgery lasted the whole night and the boy fought well

The boy was lucky, the bullet was a rib away from his heart
But the mother says her son is alive, because i did my own part

True heroes are not those who work while others sleep at night
Anybody can be a hero, all it takes is for you to play your part right.
