Since you already have a premises and if you can supply your own raw materials, that is palm kernel nuts, you need just about N1.5 million to set it up.

Let us serialize in simple terms the viability and profitability of this business on a small scale and for ease of understanding.

The process of crushing palm kernel nuts will result in producing palm kernel oil, palm kernel cake and palm kernel sludge.
The main market for these products are {1} the vegetable oil companies and soap/chemical industries for palm kernel oil PKO
{2} animal feeds companies and exporters markets for palm kernel cake PKC and {3} local women and others who reprocess sludge to further extract black oil and piggery farmers

The norm in the industry is between 40% and 45% extraction rate for PKO, 50% and 55% for PKC and 1% and 2% for sludge.

Given 25 tons of palm kernel nuts, the yield should be 10 tons of PKO, 13.75 tons of PKC and 0.5 tons of sludge.

Lets look at the profitability of this business

Given the cost of one ton of Palm Kernel Nuts of N75,000 today at our market,
25 tons of PKN delivered to factory would cost N1,875,000

After processing we shall realize 10 tons of Palm Kernel Oil, PKO, 13.5 tons of Palm Kernel cake PKC and .5 tons of Sludge.

As at today we sold PKO at N205,000 per ton, PKC at N20,000 per ton and Sludge went for N40,000 per ton.

So looking at the total realizable revenue from the sale of the PKO, PKC and Sludge produced from the 25 tons of Palm Kernel Nuts, PKN

We have

Sales N2,050,000 + N270,000 + N20,000 = N2,340,000
Less Cost of Sales N1,875,000

Gross Margin N465,000
Less Estimated Operating Expenses N139,500

Net profit N325,500

The business of palm kernel oil extracting has never been so good since the era of President Obasanjo's regime. The present policy of President Buhari is definitely favouring the sector as it is no more easy for people to import cheap refined vegetable oil from Malaysia and Singapore. With today's price of the raw material (palm kernel nuts) going for Ñ105,000 per ton at Enugu and the finished product (PKO) selling for N310,000 per ton and (PKC) selling for N25,000 per ton, operators are looking at a gross margin of not less than N78,750 for every ton of PKO processed.
