When to put on covers: • 2-3 weeks after flowering • The flower remnants at the base of the fruit should be hard and dry. • The fingers of the fruit curl upward. How to put covers on: • Slide the bunch cover up from the bottom of the stalk. • Securely tie or attached the bunch cover to the bunch stalk above the first hand of fruit. • The cover should be left open at the bottom and hang at least 150 millimeters below the last hand of fruit • Covers should be left on until harvest, about 2 months later.

Test your soil's pH level to determine if lime is needed. A pH test measures the soil's alkalinity or acidity. When the pH is above 7.0, the soil is said to be alkaline; when below 7.0, it is acidic. A pH level of 6 to 7 is ideal for most grasses. If your soil is too acidic, use a lime application.

When you are buying land, chose the site should be easily accessible, have good exposure to sunlight and offer shelter from the wind. Flat or slightly sloping land with good drainage should be chosen rather than land with steep slopes that could lead to problems of erosion and loss of fertile soil, and that have greater risk of wind damage. It is best to use virgin land due to its high levels of organic matter, but previously cultivated, fallow land can also be used, depending on the amount of plant matter. At all costs, avoid former banana or plantain plantations due to the likelihood of poor soil fertility and phytosanitary conditions.

The plantain crop always benefits from the use of fertilizer (table 1). The yield from fertilized plants can be up to 10 times higher than that from unfertilized plants. The amount of fertilizer needed depends on soil fertility and soil type. General recommendations cannot be made as these should be based on soil or leaf analysis and the results of fertilizer experiments. Since potassium and nitrogen are easily leached, they should always be applied at regular intervals (split applications) during the growing (rainy) season. Other important nutrients are phosphate, calcium and magnesium which are provided in one application. In some exceptional cases, micro-nutrients (for example, zinc or sulfur) have to be applied.

Our government needs to support real farmers. They need to select farmers that have passion, vision and can see the future of farming in Nigeria, not the two bags of fertilizer or one bag of maize they distribute to farmers. I have about 40 acres of land, what will two bags of fertilizer do for me? The best thing is for government to bring back the Bank of Agriculture. My vision is to go for 120,000 suckers because I know I can. I have the suckers and the land, the only problem is fertilizer and funds for other inputs. Funding is what is breaking farmers down,” he said.

The desired pieces of the plant are usually planted 30–60 cm (11.8–23.6 in) deep in the soil and should generally be planted at the end of the dry season or the beginning of the wet season. Plant spacing is dependent on the cultivar being planted. Frequent weeding is required until plants are tall enough to shade out competing plants and should be started about 6 weeks after planting

Selection is the key to the whole operation: remove a healthy sucker from the base of a fully grown cultivar. The sucker should have narrow, sword-shaped leaves, with a pseudostem of 5 to 40 cm in height (sword sucker), and the bulb should be free from traces of disease (no fringing or traces of nematodes). For more enquiry please visit our above website

Re: For Irrigation Farmers And Non Irrigation Farmers ....Sedulus Farms Nig Limited by sedulus(m): 6:10pm On Jul 30, 2017
Suckers are separated from their mother plant with a spade or machete. The sucker corm must not be damaged or chipped. Consequently the corm should be carefully peeled with a machete. The pseudo stem of the suckers should be cut off a few centimeters above the corm. Peeling of the corm delays the development of nematode infestation, while cutting of the pseudo stem reduces bulkiness and improves early growth of the newly planted sucker. The peeling process is just like that for cassava.

The plant is believed to have originated in Southeast Asia. Two groups of plantains are thought to have a common origin: the horn plantain and the French plantain. Both types grow in India, Africa, Egypt, and tropical America. The French plantains also occur in Indonesia and the islands of the Pacific.
