Sickle-cell anaemia is usually a fatal disease
caused by the formation of abnormal
haemoglobin S instead of the normal
haemoglobin A. Haemoglobin is a protein, a
complex molecule made up of amino acids. Both
haemoglobin A and S molecules are alike except
in one amino acid. This difference in structure is
due to a mutation in the gene for haemoglobin. In
the mutated gene, one of the base codes on the
DNA that should read as the amino acid, glutamic
acid, has changed to read as another amino acid,
valine, instead. As a result of this change in
structure, haemoglobin S is less soluble than the
normal haemoglobin A. The haemoglobin S
molecules tend to clump causing the red blood
cells to become 'sickle-shaped'. This results in
