The world over, certain yardsticks are used to judge the level of development in each country. These yardsticks range from infrastructure, rate of literacy, growth of gross domestic product and a host of other indices.
There is no gainsaying that some nations are more developed than others. While some governments are battling with how to bring about the much needed growth of their nations, some are thinking of how to attain greater developmental accomplishments.
This chasm of indices that exist between developed countries and developing ones has over time tied developing countries to the apron strings of developed ones. Lamentably, developing nations are purblind to the fact that they can be independent of developed ones, provided they utilize to the fullest the resources at their disposal. Citizens of developing nations out of desperation and ignorance think of developed nations as elysan territories of sorts and they do all they can to jet out of their climes in quest of greener pastures.
For example in 2013, a boat in transit capsized near the island of lampedusa. This vessel which was dispatched to Italy conveyed over 500 africans looking for greener pastures in Europe damming the consequences of the odds. This tragic event lends credence to the reality of the division of the world along developmental divides. But beyond this, developing countries should see it as a clarion call to act decisively to get a place in the committee of developed nations.
It becomes vital at this juncture to ask about the building blocks of development required for countries to attain the status reached by developed nations.education to me, is the matrix of development. From either infrastructure or agriculture, the influential factor of education cannot be controverted.
The question is: why is it that most developed of economies are the most developed in education? And why do most underdeveloped of economies have underdeveloped education?these are not conundrums, as the answers to these questions are not far-fetched.one of the answers is in fact that the place of education in the development of any economy is paramount. Any nation failing in education is on the cusp of failure. Why? It is so because nations need educated citizens to formulate government policies. Without education, how can economic problems like inflation and devaluation of currency be addressed? Or how will nations tackle unemployment?
Developing nations as we know are plagued with these problems. This emphasis the need for human development in these countries. There are countries with high rate of maternal and child mortality. HIV/AIDS and other life threatening diseases are also pandemic in these countries. Simply because they lack sufficient health workers. Citizens of ailing economies sometimes go for “medical tourism” to developed countries which offer better health care services though at pricey costs.
Needless to say, when we say a country is developing, it does not mean that it isn’t endowed with natural resources. Africa, as we know, is still in the backwaters but paradoxically, has numerous resources to boast of. The cotinent provides approximately 98 percent of diamond needs in the world.
