I am not an experienced farmer but I have been resaerching on plantain farming and have to share what ive found with you guys.
PLANTAIN SET-UP
Plantains are a member of the banana family. They are a starchy, low in sugar variety that is cooked before serving as it is unsuitable raw. it is eaten boiled, roasted or fried and can be dried to make plantain flour.
They are very reliable sources of starch and energy; ensuring food security for millions of inhabitants worldwide.
Nutritional benefits include:
 . It contains 2.3 g of dietary fiber per 100 g (6% of DRA per 100 g). Adequate amount of dietary-fiber in the food helps normal bowel movements, thereby reducing constipation problems.
 Fresh Plantains have more vitamin C than bananas
 Rich in vitamin A. Besides being a powerful antioxidant, vitamin A plays a vital role in the visual cycle, maintaining healthy mucus membranes, and enhancing skin complexion.
 They also provide adequate levels of minerals such as iron, magnesium, and phosphorous. Magnesium is essential for bone strengthening and has a cardiac-protective role as well.
 Rich in potassium, Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure, countering negative effects of sodium.

The cost implications of setting up are stated below
Acquiring land: 50,000
Site preparation:
Purchase of 1000 suckers single bunch @85 per sucker: 85,000
Transportation of suckers to farm: 15, 000
Purchase and transport of poultry dropping: 20,000
Planting @N20 per sucker: 20,000
Weeding: 20,000
Miscellaneous 20,000
Security and management 50,000

MARKET POTENTIAL
With recent waves of health awareness people are seeking low sugar high energy giving foods. The price of a bunch of plantain could vary between N350-N700 this would yield between N350,000 and N700,000 in the first year of operation depending on the time of harvest(usually farmers plant around the same period flooding the market, it may be more profitable to either dry or produce chips at such periods)
HINDRANCES
The expected hindrances are theft and market instability wind and invasion by monkeys.
Theft could be largely controlled by the presence of the farm manager/security.
Market instability as stated will be countered by converting produce to flour or chips when prices fall.
wind can be put in check by siting Your farm in a place where there are trees that will serve as windbreakers or planting suitable windbreakers yourself. it is also adviseable to spread ashe s aroud the plantain base to make them firmer.
Monkeys could be controlled using scarecrows and by the presence of farm hands.

OTHER SOURCES OF INCOME.
While plantain farming promises to be a good investment it is wise not to place all eggs in one basket. Thus intercropping with maize, melon vegetables etc which are market ready earlier than the plantain will either reduce the shock of low returns or increase income.
