Damon wakes up in the Phoenix Stone to find out he's reliving the Civil War. In the clip, Damon awakens with an old-timey haircut and outfit, looking dirty and disheveled, which could only mean one thing; he's woken up during the Civil War. He is in a tent for wounded soldiers and a man sits next to him with a head gash and says: "Hi there hero. You've been out a long time." Someone comes in and delivers mail, including a letter for the Salvatore brother, who sits up to open it. The soldier next to him asks if it's news from home. He responds that it's from his brother and you can hear Stefan's voice reading the letter, saying that he knows he should only be sending good news, but he can't. Valerie has left Stefan, and their father is drinking heavily, and as for himself, Stefan says that the approaching anniversary of their mother's death is preventing him from sleeping. He ends the letter by stating: "I wish you were here brother, to teach me how to sleep through these endless nights." Damon folds the letter and forlornly looks up. This must be just the start of Damon's nightmare within the Phoenix Stone.
