Nigerian scammers these days have broken conventional scamming methods are now using more sophisticated means of robbing you of your hard earned money.

Gone are the days when a Nigerian prince contacted you seeking to move huge sums of money out of his country. Nigerian scammers have since moved on to far more complicated methods of scamming honest hard-working individuals out of their money and other valuables.

It has gotten to a point where I was chatting with a man on Tango the other day and revealed that I was from Nigeria and without wasting time, the man quickly ended the chat and blocked me without even getting to know me. This is what enraged me to publish this informative article on how to protect yourself from scammers (Nigerian or otherwise) when browsing online or when socializing on social media apps.

I will outline some following steps for you to take in order to ensure your security online and avoid being scammed by these smooth talking scamming lords.

Steps To Protect You Online From Scammers
1. Never Send Money To People You Have Never Met: This seems a bit obvious but sometimes, even the most skeptic of us may be smoothed talked or outright tricked into sending these scammers hard earned money. Whenever you meet someone online (male or female) and he or she starts asking for help for some reason or the other in less than a week, there’s a very good chance that this person may be a scammer simply looking to play on your emotions and manipulate you into sending them money.

The rule of thumb here is that you should be overly cautious of people asking for financial help from you especially after just meeting you.

Some of them might say they have a sick mother suffering from cancer or some other serious sickness that will definitely move you to pity and will ultimately end in you forking over cash you never expected to spend. When faced with these sorts, it is usually good nature to ask for a medical report or direct them to a crowdfunding platform like IndieGogo which are far better options to raise that kind of money. If the person keeps pestering you, then know that he is a scammer looking to score some easy cash he/she never worked for.

Always be extremely cautious when meeting new people on social media especially on apps like Tango, IMO, or Skype as these are currently the most used platforms by these scammers.

2. Never Agree To A Sex Chat With Strangers: This is a new method of scamming that involves the scammer contacting you and offering a sex chat always with an underage account. If accepted and nude pictures are exchanged, the scammer then tells you that he is part of some Security Agency tasked with finding and prosecuting perverts online.

He then blackmails you into sending some amount of money or else your chat and nude pictures get released to your friends and family on social media. This can be very unnerving and most people end up sending money.

Keep in mind if you send the scammer any amount of money, they will always keep coming back until you are financially ruined and some really malicious ones out there will eventually still release your nude pictures online.

Bottom line of the story is that you should never ever accept a sex chat from people you do not know physically. They might turn out to be a scammer and will definitely blackmail you. If by some misfortune you’re already involved with such a person, first thing you should do is to stop sending them any more money.

If you’re friends with them on other social media, block them immediately and set your account to private if possible. Most never carry out their threat of releasing your nude pictures and chats.

In the case that they actually do carry out their threat, you could contact the social media platform to have the pictures removed to save yourself any further embarrassment. Stay safe.

3. Double Check Web Pages Sent To You By Email Before Inputting Any Sensitive Information: Another preferred method used by scammers is by sending you a seemingly legitimate email posing as your bank or PayPal telling you that your account is in risk and that you should update your information through a link embedded in the email.

Please note that any respectable bank or PayPal will never send you a link telling you to update your information through such a link. There are almost always scammers looking to get their hands on your valuable information and might use such information to perpetrate identity theft with your identity or may even gain access to your bank account with such information and in the process empty your account.

When faced with such emails, always go to your bank’s official website and use the contact page to contact them and tell them of the email you received. They’ll tell you if it’s legitimate or not but most times, it is a scam attempt. Do not reply the email directly. Always go through the institution’s official website for such urgent and important issues.

Failing to do so might result in the loss of your hard earned money so please be pro-active against these scammers. Whenever you do fall a victim of these scams though, always report them on scam reporting websites so that other people will not fall victims to the same person. Help others to not make the same mistake as you.

If you follow the above steps and are always cautious when surfing the net, it would be incredibly hard for these scammers to make a victim of you. To recap;

(a)Never send money to unknown people online.

(b)Do not sex chat with strangers online.

(c)Always double-check links on emails from financial institutions.

Follow the above steps religiously to ensure you are not a victim of these Nigerian scammers. Remember though that anybody can fall a victim as these scammers are continuously looking for new ways to scam people off their hard earned money.
