UNiLAG Students Protest Dissatisfaction In Result. by PresaLounge: 8:23pm On Feb 10, 2016 |
UNILAG Medicine and Surgery student protest their dissatisfaction in the handling of their cross-over to College of Medicine by the school Authority. According to a source, this is the message that started the commotion, that then led to today's protest, this message was passed round on 29 January, 2016: Hello Akokites, there is a rumour that 58 out of 147 Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) students will be allowed to cross to LUTH against the usual 50% across the science division of physical, chemical and biological. Research has it that there have never been a time in history where Pre-MED students had to wait for this long before seeing the list of those that made it to LUTH. Report has it that the remaining student that wouldn't be part of the 58 will be sent home to write jamb all over even though jamb form closes in 3days and the list is still yet to be released. I was also told the Pre-MED students plan to meet by 10:00am today(29/01/2016) at amphi theatre and maybe go on a peaceful protest. ULSSA(Unilag Science Student Association), please come to our rescue in any way you can. The school authority decided to change the grading system to a grade-point system. Reason being that the crowd in that area of study(Medicine and surgery) was becoming 'unbearable', and the rate at which student fail while in College of Medicine, Unilag. Today, 10 February, 2016 the student took to the 'street' and started a peaceful protest to the senate of the school, even though the VC didn't come out due to reasons best known to him, the Student Union Leader; Mr Mohammed Olaniyi addressed the aggrieved student, all to no avail. The peaceful and quiet protest then turned rowdy as the student didn't feel satisfied with the response they got from the SUG leader. PresaLounge spoke to a student, Miss Funmi about the incident as she is part of the affected student: We were told about this development during our 2nd semester, towards the end of the year. But it is still unfair, I spent 3years at home waiting for this course, now I have it and UNILAG is moving me to another course despite having a grade point of 4.0 which would have normally taken me through if we used the old system, but they are asking for 4.5. I don't know what to do again, this is unfair. We also spoke to another Student now, Mr Lekan, Department of Physiotherapy, to shed more light on the matter, This is injustice, we student of prospective student of college of medicine wouldn't take this. Presalounge tried speaking with the Student Union Leader, he said everything is under control. That the aggrieved student would be heard. http://presalounge..com.ng/2016/02/unilag-student-protest-dissatisfaction.html?m=1 1 Like

Medical students in 100 level at the University of Lagos and their parents on Wednesday disrupted academic and business activities in the institution. The protesters, who shut the university’s main gate, accused the university authorities of denying them promotion to 200-level. According to them, the authorities introduced some new academic rules that have denied many of them from proceeding to the university’s College of Medicine, Idi-Araba to continue their programme. The protesters also argued that the new scheme was to allow the authorities to admit diploma students to the faculty. The protesters alleged that the diploma students paid handsomely for the offer. However the authorities said the professional bodies regulating the study of medical programmes in the country, introduced a fresh index system to regulate the quota allocated to individual university. The UNILAG Head, Information Unit, Mr. Toyin Adebule, made this known in a statement on Wednesday night. According to him, UNILAG authorities will not want to flout such directive, as those admitted outside the quota will not be allowed to practice after graduation. The statement read in part, “This year, the professional bodies have insisted on the enforcement of the quota upon which accreditation is hinged and hence the college has had to conform. What this means is that only students that are indexed will be registered by the professional bodies to practice after graduation. “Senate at its meeting held on Wednesday, 27th January, 2016 had approved the implementation of the re-arrangement to conform to the professional bodies’ quota in order not to lose accreditation. This has regrettably meant that we have only been able to receive students into the college only up to the number the College of Medicine is allowed by the quota. “We recognise and regret that this has led to some students being unable to cross over into the College of Medicine or their course of choice. Consequently, all candidates who were not successful to be placed in programmes in CMUL have been allocated to appropriate programmes on the main campus in Akoka.” www.punchng.com/100-level-medical-students-parents-protest-in-unilag/ |

oladapoa1:You need to read the story a second time. They are not talking about GPA here. You may also need to do some searching online to get the full gist. |

mbhs139:*excerpts -rate of failure is high -some were given less scores, while few earned higher score (as usual) -bench mark was raised from 4.0 to 4.5 -streamline to avoid excess, but to ensure quality Deduce-all this scenerio builds up all medical schools. It has always been the best of the bests. |

I can see many lies from this post. -it's 60 students that moved to idi-araba not 58. -cutoff mark was placed at 4.11CGPA not 4.50. -Unilag changed there course for them and the lists is at the general office. A friend who is number 61 with 4.08 and two other guys was transferred to Dentistry... |

oladapoa1: What I gleaned from the story is an issue between Unilag Medical College and the Medical Council of Nigeria. They are just using the student as a pawn. It's alright. Correction is well taken and in good faith. |
