“It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a child with autism to raise the consciousness of the village,” Coach Elaine Hall
In Africa, training a child is not a one man job, it is a collective and continous project that demands patience and understanding from everyone the child has contact with. It is a psychological project executed unconsciously by non-family members, as neighbours and friends tend to admonish a wrong act and praise a good behavior without examining their reasons for doing so.
However, due to the complexity of the human mind, there are alot of actions and non-actions that people tend to mis-understand and because they can not explain it, they attach negetive labels to people exhibiting odd behaviour. Coach Elaine Hall statement rings true, as it is only when man comes across someone different that they become curious of such differences. Life is a learning process; an autistic child can teach you alot about life, if you let them. Principles such as patience, understanding, friendship and co-operation will have a greater meaning when you see the world of an autistic child. Curiosity opens doors of knowledge and eliminates ignorance. Let’s learn more about Autism and its effects on people we love, let’s eradicate stigmatization. Together we can support people living with autism to reach their best.
