asalimpo: Yeah that sucks big time. The BIG difference in pay is shameful. Very Shameful. Programmers in Nigeria are definitely not respected at all. Reason why I going so hard about this, is because my cousin was CONVINCED that I would earn more as a Web Dev in Nigeria as opposed to London. When I told him, an junior dev get paid more than a senior dev in Nigeria, he didnt believe me 1 Like |

Have any of you guys tried to apply for vacancies in other countries? PHP is still widely used. The thing about being a developer here, is that if you only know one programming language either it be javascript, php, c# etc, there will always be a job for you.. Hell even simple Basic HTML & CSS knowledge can get you a job For example developing email templates you can get paid really well here Junior Email developer for 25k per annum (N7m) http://www.indeed.co.uk/cmp/Xcede/jobs/Junior-Email-Developer-477b29655eb2a900?q=HTML+Email+Developer Why work for peanuts when you can earn 5 times in another country? 3 Likes |

webdevgod:the only professions with good pay are those that confer bragging rights here. That's why certifications are so much a big deal here. Acca, ican, coren,LLB,LLM , phD,mba, cfa, cisa. Once it can be mystified, certificatted, and bragged about (e.g used to trail your name ), the salary may improve. That's how we think. If one corporation created artificial scarcity and prestige around programming, web dev like they do around, business admin (mba), accounting (acca, ican), law (law school), finance (cfa, cfe), or medicine (medical school). Nigerians will tumble over themselves to join, and the salary may improve. It's all myopia. Programming trumps law, accounting, medicine etc in difficulty yet the professionals here are treated like sh*t. 1 Like |

okeyxyz: Plenty things is wrong with it. If you are a newbie in programming and you want to code for the market, learn .Net Framework / Java |

asalimpo: What I don't get is why more Nigerian programmers aren't trying to bid for remote contracting or outsourcing work. After all, there are plenty of websites like Freelancer (https://www.freelancer.com/), Elance (https://www.elance.com/) or Guru (http://www.guru.com/) where one can apply for a job even from Nigeria, and get paid in USD or Euros. Why earn peanuts working for a Nigerian firm when one can make much more without even have to leave the house? |

Re: Nigeria Sucks On Programming. by dammytosh: 7:37pm On Feb 25, 2016 |
webdevgod: Like I said earlier. A graphics designer is different from a programmer. Some one who copies php scripts up and down is not a programmer. No COMPANY IN NIGERIA will pay a programmer 40k a month. I got more even as IT student as a programmer over 11 years ago and on the 1m a month a programmer is receiving, i have 3-4 friends i know. If you are curious we can place a bet we arrange how you will see at least 1 play slip / offer letter. Like i said. The skill set is not copying and pasting scripts. We are talking about core developers who build MISSION CRITICAL SYSTEMS not a website with marquee and java scripts. |
Re: Nigeria Sucks On Programming. by dammytosh: 7:44pm On Feb 25, 2016 |
GodMode: You are simply buttressing my point that PHP is cheap. No serious company in Nigeria will put their MISSION CRITICAL APPLICATIONS on PHP. When i call programmers, i am not talking about some one who copies scripts and modify with a few texts flying from left to right on the screen. |

GodMode: All laffable. That is typical of this generation, Empty vessels makes the loudest noise. What crappy code are people paying for ? Oh My ! No wonder everybody kept assuming programming is about copying and pasting some silly scripts and adjusting a CMS template. You have a very looooong way to go. Over 10 years in this game and I can tell you with authority. Go and learn and quit the get coins (money) fast schemes. |

dammytosh: Some one who copies php scripts up and down is not a programmer. Lol.. I dont know what field you are in, but Im in Web Development, and PHP is very serious for back end developers espically when it comes to developing eCommerce sites. And what do you mean by copying and pasting scripts? |
Re: Nigeria Sucks On Programming. by asalimpo(m): 8:46pm On Feb 25, 2016 |
GodMode:theyre cheap compared to more prestigious certs in other fields. And very unpopular cuz with programming you just cant fake it. Many companies will take a degree or portfolios over any piece of paper anyday. I'm just saying in Nigeria , paper certs is job market currency. I know of java cert , but it's a dubious thieving scam by oracle. Ocja, ocjp are all objective questions. Tell me, how does passing objective tests demonstrate that you are a competent programmer? It doesnt but it lines oracles pocket with your fees. Ocj m - you take a project and do some actual coding. But you have to pay oracle $900 for compulsory training! Training you already possess, if you can programme. Microsoft certs are the same. Exploitation. |
Re: Nigeria Sucks On Programming. by webdevgod: 8:46pm On Feb 25, 2016 |
dammytosh: Im pretty sure PHP is a programming language if you check here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programming_languages Therefore anyone who writes script in PHP is a PHP programmer. |
Re: Nigeria Sucks On Programming. by webdevgod: 8:49pm On Feb 25, 2016 |
asalimpo: Over here, experience is what counts most. Most jobs dont require you to have certificates and all that jazz. As long as you have a portfolio to show case your skills, you'll get the job. 1 Like |

webdevgod:that's a developed society. Where truth and reason guides action not sentiments. Over here it's the other way around. That's 9jans queue up to run to where things work. You can imagine having portfolios, acing interviews, proving your mettle hands on, yet being ignored cuz you dont have some kind of paper? And these are jobs that require just basic logic not scientific knowledge. That's 9ja for you. |

dammytosh: Not so. There's nothing wrong with PHP except for the ignorant perception by the Nigerian market which is still an infant industry. PHP does the job as well as any other server side programming language. And PHP is getting more powerful and much faster by the day. 1 Like 2 Shares |
Re: Nigeria Sucks On Programming. by dammytosh: 11:13am On Feb 26, 2016 |
okeyxyz: Yes perception by the Nigerian market is a fact. Ignorance or not is the only one I disagree with. In current Nigeria, and I remember saying the same statement 8 years ago. PHP resources are very cheap and too many to come by. The adverse effect is that you will come across many quacks who modify a template and feels they are also programmers until a requirement specific to a domain comes and they discover that there is more to life of a programmer than ADD, DELETE , INSERT and UPDATING the DB with a page and script generation tools. If you are in school and preparing for the Market and you want a steady rise and impact in all the major sectors. PHP alone cannot take you there. 2 Likes 1 Share |

^^^ @dammytosh Nobody is saying PHP alone can take you to your career heights. I just have a problem with your attempt to knock down PHP on the premise that it's not very valuable in the Nigerian market. I still maintain this is due to ignorance in the market. People generally don't respect much a tool that is easy to learn, which is what PHP is to any newbie. No fancy nor complex installations & setups. Just install your LAMP or WAMP, type simple instructions in notepad++ and point your browser to the domain, and that's it. Easy!! But in terms of functionality, libraries, documentation & support, usability & flexibility, PHP does it's job as perfectly as any other tool out there. I understand your rating based on commercial value IN NIGERIA, but that's not a technical assessment. It does not demonstrate that PHP has any functional, performance nor securiity drawbacks when compared to other tools. |
Re: Nigeria Sucks On Programming. by dammytosh: 9:18pm On Feb 26, 2016 |
okeyxyz:You know wat, u got my point. I am not talking technical value in Nigeria , i am talking about commercial value. A .NET/JAVA enterprise developer will likely be offered twice if not thrice of what a PHP programmer will be offered in Nigeria. I hire for the 3 and i know wat i am saying. I write the 3 comfortably and i have deployed applications running with them. But as someone who have experience in the industry, i won't advise anyone to focus on PHP. 1 Like 1 Share |
