With the recent announcement of the splitting of Nigerian music sensation Dbanj and his producer Deevee this week, it is heartbreaking how the singer has gone from hero to zero within a short space of time since
quitting Mo-Hits Records. It is obvious he has failed to sign a producer who is effective in bringing out the best in him like his first producer and record partner Don Jazzy once did. To buttress further , a better understanding of the singers history , success and mistakes are needed.

When Michael Enebeli (Don Jazzy) and Dbanj (Oladapo Oyebanjo) came together from London to form Mo-Hits Record label , releasing their first single 'Tongolo' which was alledged to have been sponsored by Dbanj's mother in 2004, no one envisaged the duo will rule the nations music industry and in extension Africa for a long while .

Fast forward to 2006 and the duo were already big in the industry . Together they two consistently made songs which became hit upon hit and which was even used by the P.D.P (ruling party) for it's national campaign 'de Koko'. They record label grew and so did their crew with the addition of Dr Sid and Wande Coal. Mo-Hits produced and sponsored Dbanj's three albums , No Long Thing -Tongolo and Koko in 2005, Rundown-Funk Uup. - Why me, Tongolo (remix ) in 2006 and the most successful of all, The Entertainer- Kimon and Gbono Feli Feli.

It did not end there as Dbanj won several national and international awards which includes Best African Act at MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at MTV Africa Music Awards 2009, Best International Act at BET Awards 2011 to mention but a few. Also his summer hit "Oliver Twist" a fusion of electronic dance music and Afrobeat topped the 2011 African charts and reached no2 in the UK singles chart in 2012.

Dbanj and Mo-Hits no doubt were on top of the world and other African singers were far behind. With all these success recorded by the duo it wasn't surprising to hear that G.O.O.D record label owned by Kanye West had signed Dbanj in 2011. The next year was a difficult year for the duo as Don Jazzy confirmed that rumours about the duo's split was true . It wasn't difficult to predict that while Dbanj's talent was never in doubt , the split was a fatal mistake on his part as it may be impossible to find a producer who gets the best out of him like Don Jazzy.

If this was a prophesy it didn't take long to come true as Don Jazzy quickly moved on and formed Mavin Records which though slowly has turned out to be a major success in the industry. Under Mavin Records are artistes Recado Banks, Koredo Bello, Djia and Tiwa Savage. On the other part Dbanj hasn't really done much with few hit songs like Feeling the Nigga featuring Akon and On top of the world . Dbanj became history and it wasn't as if the veteran had taken a bow from music rather it was as a result of his failure to deliver the hit tracts he once dished out on a daily basis in Mo-Hits.

Ironically , the most puzzling thing to decipher in the career of Dbanj is how he has been able to sign much more endorsements after his split with little or less recent success in the industry . Such deals include Bank of Industry (B.O.I) ambassador , first African ambassador of Beats by Dre, Ciros Nigeria official African ambassador to mention but a few. While these endorsements perhaps made him the richest Nigerian musician, his music career suffered as he was further alienated from mainstream music.

It might have taken the singer time to realise that he is currently travelling in a sinking ship as the sacking of his producer (DeeVee) shows how eager he is to resurrect his music career as it is currently on diminishing returns. To do that Dbanj has to recreate, repackage and relaunch his career from the scratch. He might not be able to work with Don Jazzy again but that doesn't mean there isn't so many producers who will put him on the world map if he is humble and disciplined . Until he does the above mentioned , then he might never be the same singer who put Nigerian music on the world map.
