Alibaba, China’s online e-commerce giant is set to launch it’s first internet-connected car according to a report released on Tuesday.

According to Wang Jian, the company’s chief technology officer, details of the car, a sport utility vehicle will be made public at an event in April. He, however, revealed that the SUV is an energy-saving car that will be capable of retaining 80% of its battery capacity after it must have covered up to 160,000 km.

The car is a joint venture development between the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) and Alibaba that will be equipped with some proprietary intellectual property rights. According to Wang, Alibaba arranged over 800 researchers and invested billions of dollars into the project. He added that the internet car will not only promote people-to-car communication, it will expand car-to-car, car-to-road, and car-to-infrastructure communication.
